I'll start by saying this - the following question is that of a simpleton!

I've restored an old pic of my Grandmother, nothing clever like the tinting, I've just covered up her attempts at restoration (she tried to use a biro - a blue one!) and sorted out the creasing etc.

I want to get it printed and have looked at a couple of sites. One of them is quoting £6.49 for a 15x10 (I assume that is the standard size that prints used to come in? 15x10cm?) matte finish.

Seems like a lot to me, but then its years since I've had any photos printed. Is the cost about right? Is it expensive because I want matte? Do you think that matter would be the best option for an old photo?

Sorry to ask what should perhaps be obvious, but I'm totally clueless!

Try Photobox, 15x10, gloss or matt, £2.99 + postage

www.photobox.co.uk/services.html

I always go for gloss, it seems to give better contrast.

NB That's 15 x 10 inches; most prints are still measured in inches. So if you wanted the 'normal' size of 6 x 4", Photobox charge an outrageous 8p!

That's not cheap. A 16x10 is £1.97 at Asda who came out top in a national photo print rating......

That's on lustre paper, though the finish is a personal choice. If you're framing it, it probably makes no difference.

Thanks, chaps! I will investigate further. Top advice about the sizes - I thought the measurements were in cm - that would explain why it was so expensive for that size. Glad I asked smile
