Hi all,

I am considering getting an S2 and was wondering how they are on fuel and if there is much room for a baby seat and push chair?

S2 coupe or avant?

Assuming on coupe I currently have a coupe and the boot is big, you will get a pushchair in no problem. As for back seat space I'd happily go a long way in there!

If your looking at an avant it will be bigger.

Nice cars.

I get 18mpg. Mine is not a daily driver. If you don't have an independent near you, that knows the S2 specifically, it will be expensive. Not many stealers know how to look after them any more.
They are awesome. The avant is a real sleeper.

Mike Dewars nice buyers guide is applicaable to both the coupe and the avant, or any other variety of coupe.

I had a cq for 3 years, its has been to Bath and back (over 1000 miles that holiday) with wife two kids and 10 days of camping stuff. No problem at all. Actually quite close to a proper Grand Tourer, back is roomy for a coupe. The flipping the seat back and forward is ok, it doesn't slide and pivot, just pivot. There is a small plastic trim which guards the seat, which my kids kicked off constantly, a small irritation, i just removed it in the end. The boot opens big and can actually swallow a lot.

S2 economy, i know a fair few owners one who gets a regular 30mpg but he does drive like miss daisy (his alter ago!)

Understated car, well built, quick a good all rounder. Depends on your slant but finding an original one is getting harder and harder to locate. The interiors wear well, esp the quattro cloth and the leather, if your going for baby and pram, i would go leather in retrospect!

Wife info, not sure on the S2's but from 93 the rest of the coupes got a drivers airbag. I think i am correct in saying they are all procon-ten as well (basically a mad arrangement of pulley which move the engine out of the way in the even of a prang. hugely solid and for its age relatively safe.

After the arrival of our first bundle of joy I looked for an S2 Avant.

I suspect I may have timed my search badly as for some reason there seemed to be a spike in price, and while I was after a 'good' one and was prepared to pay a reasonable amount what I wasn't prepared to do was buy a car unseen. I arranged on a couple of occasions to view cars, (both a fair distance from home) the first the guy phoned to tell me someone had offered him the asking price over the phone (it wasn't cheap) The car then appeared on ebay with an inflated reserve, then on autotrader at ever reducing prices. The second I went to see, it was in ok shape but needed a little work and I wanted to get some proces on replacement parts. By the following day this guy had also been offered the asking price over the phone with no inspection.

Both cars were low mileage (sub 100k) and both were the thick end of 6k so I think the prices reflected condition and mileage.

I guess the point I am trying to make is if you really want an S2 (they are great cars) get on to the various forums (s2forum.com is a good start) and maybe even join a club, get to know the good cars, and be patient.

Me? in the end I gave up cry and bought a VR6 golf and then after the second arrived an Allroad. But I really do wish I'd got that first S2 it looked a peach.

Cheers Cpn A
