Afternoon chaps, I'm off tomorrow to have a check over / finalise buying a 2004 A8 4.2. Seems to be brimmed with all sorts of toys and goodies to go wrong, which will be fun....

A couple of questions:

IIRC, the 2004 cars only had a wired phone, no bluetooth - is this something Audi will upgrade or do I go down the aftermarket route?
If the latter is the case, has anyone fitted one of these - http://www.ipodcarkitdirect.co.uk/iPod_Car_Kit/For... - as they look rather capable bits of kit, assuming one can use the MMI / voice control system to dial and control the phone...

Do the 19's make much of a difference to the ride over the 18's? Considering it's going to pull duty as a motorway hack I'd be tempted to swap them out for smaller wheels if they'll settle better over the bumps. Currently the car has the enormous multi-spoke slighty-shin things (not up on my codenames as yet I'm afraid!)

Nav discs - Do these come from Audi (for a no doubt exorbitant fee) or are there alternatives? The Navteq site seems to imply the former frown

Are there any choice mods or things I ought to be looking out for, or are they pretty much right out of the box for hammering the autobahns?

Many thanks for any advice and abuse wink

19" wheels are known to spoil the ride, so I'd settle for smaller ones if possible as you're looking at doing some serious motorway miles.

With regards to the sat nav, yes, Audi do supply disks and yes, they are very expensive (circa £250 if I remember correctly...)

With the bluetooth phone, as far as I know Audi won't upgrade it themselves, but if you give them a ring then they will give you the name of a company (I've forgotten the name) who supplies all their systems and such, who are able to come round to your house and fit the system (they fitted ipod connectivity on my A8 very well)

As far as I know there are no major mods you need for good motorway cruising. They are very silent and effortless while cruising, you really don't notice how many miles are going by!

Hope that helps

Wonderful Ori, much appreciated - the indie dealer has a set of the smaller wheels, so I may haggle a tad to get them swapped over.

I have 20" wheels fitted to my car, and haven't had any complaints in the year I've owned it. I know the ride is meant to be more supple on 18" wheels but on test drives I found that the bigger wheels gave my car a sportier feel.

I also have a 2004 4.2 and have the phone fitted. I know that it's bluetooth but can't seem to get it to pick up my normal phone. Is it really the case that I have to keep swapping my sim over (my network won't give me another sim, long story)?

From the test drives it did seem the larger wheels gave the car a "sportier" feel, but then I have the TVR for when I want proper sports, the A8 is just a motorway hack!

Seems that Bluetooth didn't even appear until 05 cars, so are you sure yours has BT? Is your phone in the list of compatible ones?

19s are preferable for a minute difference in ride quality - the 18s make it look hugely under-wheeled.

IMO the 18" wheels only look really small in pictures, in person they don't look bad on the car.
