Xbox live help.....

ok so im coming to the end of my one month trial before i buy the gold subscription...
so i made a new email address for this account no probs etc etc....
but now im thinking of scrapping it and getting a new gamer tag rather than my current one. my problem is ive already downloaded some DLC (pgr4, forza2, halo3) so if i change my live gamer tag will i lose that too even tho it seems to be saved to my system. i believe i can change the address my normal account uses (as in before i was connected to live) to link to another xbox live gamertag/address. i presume il lose my friends tho but i can soon add them all again.
Is this right?
Or shud i just pay the 800 credit points and change it that way?
