Hi,

Amateur photographer here so please be gentle!

I have been looking for a large picture for an empty wall at home and found some great prints of London landscapes but they cost around £500 with a frame.

That got me thinking about using on of my own photographs.

How big can I go when using a 1200x800(?) resolution picture taken on a 6mb pixel camera? I'm thinking 100cm x 80cm roughly.

If its possible what is the best way of going about getting it printed? I guess Tescos dont print that large!!

Any pointers appreciatedsmile

You can go as big as you like, it's just that the pixels get further apart so acceptable viewing distance increases. 6Mp (megapixels not megabytes) is 3008 x 2000 pixels, or at least a 6Mp D70 is, so yours won't be much different.

So if you take 3008 pixels and print them across 100cm (39" ) you get 77 pixels per inch. That's less than most pundits would recommend but I've got a 90 x 60cm canvas print made from a D70 image and I'd say it looks 'acceptable'.

You can easily get large size acrylic prints done of your photos a lot cheaper than £500. A recent comparison test in a photo magazine recommended Asda as one of the better ones.

Have a look here http://www.asda-photo.co.uk/wpp/asda/buygifts_tour...

I have home printed 6mp images to A4 and they are superb. I have recently started experimenting to A3 but haven't done enough yet to report back - but I will. I recently obtained a HP1220C A3 printer, you see.

I have a 6MP image at 30x20 inches on my hallway wall. It looks great, no pixellation or anything.

Thanks for the repliessmile

I'll have a trawl through my libary and see what stands out. I've got a few night shots of the london nightscape taken is black and white, the grainy appearance is a nice effect that I want to keep but understand that it could also make it look "blocky" if its too big.

Presumably I need to think about viewing distances too...

I use 'Genuine Fractals' software to enlarge up to five times original with little discernible loss of quality.

I've done a great many large canvasses for fellow PHers over the years -
my site is www.fluid-images.co.uk. There are plenty of plaudits for my work on this forum.

I'm also a working professional photographer, and have a good selection of London cityscapes on my other site www.fluidimages.co.uk

Let me know if I can be any help to you,

Tim

Great, had a quick look round your site and I'm interested. I'll measure up when I get home tonight. If I go for a A0 size, any recommendations what to supply you with to ensure the best quality? I think from the photos I've got to choose from that they vary in quality and size, will that effect it when its increased in size?

The best thing to do is to email me (seperate emails for each) the images you have in mind, and I'll get straight back to you. My address is tim@fluidimages.co.uk

Just had a panoramic image printed on canvas at 70" by 34" - it's MASSIVE, and looks great. The source image was 4000 x 2000 which is 8 megorpixoids. I then scaled it up to about 150mp for printing.

Go for it. smile

Sounds mint, where did you get it printed?

I got it done by these guys

Cost £80 odd which included having it laminated which is way less than I found it anywhere else - and the quality is excellent.
