Intermittant starting up problems on mk4 golf gt tdi 150
Discussion
Hi
Just wandering if anyone can advise here.
I have had intermittant problems where when i start (from warm) the car will cut out straight away or has power loss for a few minutes then is okay.
There will be a puff of grey/white smoke as well.
Then it will drive fine and not smoke.
Its happened a few times over the last few weeks but today lasted an hour so i called out the AA.
He did some tests, and said fuel problem. He advised the smoke was water but my coolant has been fine and pressure test showed no leak.
He said could be water in tank and ruled out the fuel pump but said the fuel filter needs changing.
Ive left it at the vw to test on their system tomorrow but just want to know if anyone else has had this or knows what it is?

No problems with my TDI (130) but in general if a diesel doesn't go then water in the fuel is the first suspect. There is usually a water trap in the fuel filter somewhere - if you hire any diesel plant it will say "drain water trap daily", but I've never done this on my car or had to do any more than 40K filter changes.
My recommendations:
- If you haven't changed the filter recently, then get it changed.
- If you have changed the filter recently, change where you fill up.

I've just ordered a filter from vwspares for £10+VAT which is quite good as VW were charging £75 inc 15 min fitting.
Im gonna see how this affects it first as some users on another forum have said could be the filter clogged as fuel pump fault would mean car would not run at all. The vw system did bring up no fault so i wander if they have just said pump for the sake of it. Alot of people have had this fault in which vw have not been able to fix.

Just an update on this.
So far after 3-4 days with the new fuel filter it has been okay.
will post updates of any changes. I have also been advised from other forums it could be the tandem pump faulty or have an air leak on the tandem due to the gasket needing replacing. I will check these next.
I have also noticed the egr valve was caked in black stuff but this only affects smooth running and mpg if it gets to clogged up
