I've recently noticed oil leaking from a couple of places and also 4th gear has started to become difficult to engage on the LT77 gearbox on my 92 Griffith.
Its done 40k so I am putting the poor 4th gear selection down to possibly the clutch ware or bearings which could do with replacing too..but, if I wanted to replace the LT77 box with another of the similar ratios, what options do I have?
also,are these worth rebuilding?
cheers..h

Heliox, they can be rebuilt really well. I'd suggest you contact Ken Tomlinson. He's the guy who rebuilds the Rover boxes for everybody else in the trade. He's over towards Coventry. If you want his details pm me and I'll find them for you. He's a really good bloke, works on transmissions at Rover or used to. I haven't spoken to him for years but would go there if I needed help with and axle or box.
I'd replace the g.box oil - use the synthetic 75W-90 stuff, Castrol do it, the ATF as reccommended by Rover etc is too thin for the bearings and offers less effective snychromesh. Also try bleeding / replacing seals in the clutch hydraulics.

I presume that this is the same LT77 designation that is fitted to the Land Rover?
if it is a company called Ashcroft Transmissions are extremely good at re-builds. Obviously the ratios etc may be different but the workmanship is the same.
if you want to swap gearboxes then the T5 is a little old fashioned now. Go for a Borg Warner T56 six speed or a stronger Tremec box as fitted to the new tuscans etc. These are good old fashioned american boxes which can be purchased through real steel etc between £1400 and £2000 New. the adapter plates for countless rover applications are readily available from lots of sources.
