Windows Media Centre Set-Up Xbox 360
Discussion
If you have Windows Vista Home Premium then you can use the 360 as a Windows Media Center Extender. If you have Windows XP, and Windows Media Player 11 you need to goto Media Player settings Library > Media Sharing. Follow the guide here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox36...

It's a doddle if your desktop has normal XP and you've got windows media player 11 installed - instructions here http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox36...
Seriously, it's a piece of piss.

Until it stops working for no reason whatsoever and takes you hours of playing around with various settings and uninstalling/reinstalling various things until you give up in a huff, only for it to start working again the next day with no changes...Seriously, it's a piece of piss.

TRY TVersity is what you mean.
I did, and found it crashing on me like no other application I've seen previously. And to call it resource hungry would be putting it mildly.
There are other media servers out there; the full suite of Nero has a media server that works ok.
Windows media connect is ok.
Twonky Media server works best for me.
Try all of the above until you find one you like.

Sorry to hear that, i can only presume you had it transcoding media ? It uses FFMpeg as its transcoding engine which is widely known to be the fastest encoder/decoder on the PC. The user intreface is a bit naff though.I did, and found it crashing on me like no other application I've seen previously. And to call it resource hungry would be putting it mildly.

That was if you left it alone. Getting it to do something (transcode divx for example) resulted in a crash every few minutes. Couldn't even be bothered to go through the forums to try to work it out (I suspect the FFMpeg stuff as the main culprit, I've got more codecs installed on this pc than I care to think about), I just said 'sod that' and tried other software instead. Twonky was the least intrusive and most effective for what I wanted to do.
Is it worth switching to twonky if you've never had any problems for wmp11? The pc I use to share files to the 360 is only used for utorrent, slimserver and wmp11, and if twonky uses less resources than wmp11, them slimserver won't be so clunky. Shame twonky doesn't support the squeezebox - slimserver is a pig when you've got a lot of files.

Actually, no. I found a memory leak on it that meant it crashed after about 45 minutes having eaten more than a Gb.

FFMpeg doesn't use external codecs (its all self-contained), maybe that was your problem ? Pain-in-the-arse sorting 3rd party codecs out (saying that you could get a codec called FFDShow with is a FFMpeg based codec). Saying that it could be a fault in the windows-media encoder stuff (the microsoft codec that encodes to wmv)That was if you left it alone. I'll give Twonky a try later, sounds interesting

I saw the need for TVersity before the AVI/DivX compatibility was added - but why now?
It can transcode containers too, so .mkv files will play (they contain the same mpeg4 stream inside).I've also had some divx that give me the "media not supported" error too so it's not as compatible as say VLC player.
