Anyone heard of "Powerboxes" for Diesels ?

I am trying to get some extra performance out of my co car a Lexus is220d (Not as easily done as a VAG diesel)
I have found these on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Power-Box-CR-Diesel... & as buyer has 100% feedback to date i'm considering giving one a try.
Has anyone had any experience of these things or have any advise? (Needs to be removable for servicing etc )

Diesel tuning boxes have been around for years but nowadays most companies simply remap the ecu

I researched into these when I had a 306 HDi ... Supposedly the powerboxes are not the best method for extracting extra power out of your diesel engine. I was told, so not sure if this is correct, that the powerboxes achieve this by increasing the fuel pressure, and therefore increasing the strain on the fuel pump ... A remap is about the same price and a better way to go imho

The reason manufacturers don't do it is because of increased tax bands, emission levels and longevity of the engines etc. These things do work, I've tried them. But if it's on ebay and promises the earth, it's not likely to do much.

Best thing to do is to join a Lexus forum and ask other Lexus owners of their opinions.

They work in a variety of ways mostly adjusting the inputs the ECU sees from the sensors on the car , and can add more fuel and increase boost when full throttle.
A decent company will normally offer a warranty for example Van Aaken had a 60,000 mile warranty and with a removable box its unlikely the manufacturers would know its been fitted.
Some companies doing remaps can upload multiple maps to the cars ecu which the owner can switch between, return it to the standard map when you take it in for a service again unless the manufacturer specifically looks for the additonal maps they would not show up.
Not only did my tuning box shave a fair bit off the 0-60 it also made the car cruise nicer at motorway speeds
Best option if you want a plug in type unit which can esily be removed for servicing etc is the "TUNIT" box

I have one on my 2007 A4 SLINE car is standard 140bhp diesel.
Had it set and is measuring 189.9 on the dyno, a useful lift in anybodies book.
Economy has not been affected either which was paramount to me given i do 600-900 miles per week and get around 40-50mpg depending on footwear

A friend has a P-Box on his Disco-3. It is installed between the engine and the ECU so that any updates LandRover may apply to the ECU can be applied a) without LandRover's knowledge that the P-Box is there, and b) without overwriting any of the P-Box code.
Remaps of the original ECU can be overwritten by the dealer when they apply updates (remember some ECUs control more than just the engine), i.e. you lose your upgraded power.
Also, products that offer in-ECU upgrades are visible to dealers who may invalidate warranty or simply refuse to provide updates.
Changes of ANY type, whether they be remaps, in-ECU upgrades or additional boxes DO NOT INCREASE FUEL PRESSURE. How can they? That is a function of the fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator, neither of which are controlled by the ECU (except switching the pump off and on).
Phase-1 of diesel tuning amounts to simply adding more fuel (switching the injectors on for longer each time). As diesels are deliberately tuned very lean by manfs (that's emissions legislation at work) you can add up to 33% more fuel to some engines (according to one article published on one of the Landy mags) and gain benefits all the way. Above that you need to improve your "charge" input... i.e. more air. This can be done with a bigger turbo or better intercooler... or both.
Obviously you can only add fuel as long as your fuel pump can handle it.
Another friend has a 3-litre TD 3-series Beemer. Lovely car in great blue hue, black leather and auto, and after his upgrade had quite astonishing amounts of torque. If he put his foot down at 100mph the whole front of the car would lift up like a speedboat, and the car would catapult forwards. Quite awesome.

I have heard of pretty good results from him.

I have an IS220d as a runaround that needs a bit more poke. I had a look on their site and it is saying that they have moved site.
Also are they OK with high mileage?
