Can they actually cause you harm?

Yes it hurts but is it actually hurting you (if you see what I mean)?

And, is their effect cumulative? Or is it more like a game of top trumps whereby the hottest wins?
For example, the rather tasty curry my housemate made last night contained some fairly fiery scotch bonnets. I shall give it a score of 2 on an arbitrary scale of heat. I then added some chili and garlic sauce which I shall score at 1 on the same scale. Was the overall effect a 2 or a 3?

Thanks in advance,
Charlie

Chilis are hot as a defenisve mechanism so yeah I reckon if used irresponsibly they can cause harm, especially the mental ones.

My brother had a chili eating contest with a mate when we were out getting pissed. His wife had serious chemical burns to the eyes throat and lungs the following morning and the house needed minor structural work hehe

Rub a little olive oil into the hands to create a barrier between chilli's and skin.

And perhaps rub a little into the "little fella" for good measure? You know, just in case. As a purely precautionary measure, you understand.

Right, where's that Extra Virgin?

Not quite a defense mechanism, the chilli has evolved a system to select what animal spreads its seeds. Birds are resistant to the capsaicinoids that cause the sensation of burning and will carry any seed a lot further. Give a mammal normal chillis and they won't eat them, give the same mammal chillis that are missing the capsaicinoids and they wolf them down, birds it chillis with or without. Very clever. Trust humans to develop a taste fore chemical burns hehe

I always thought the pain you feel is just a chemical reaction in your mouth and it's not actually doing you any harm whatsoever.

Chilli's are supposed to be really good for you and great for the body's defense systems.

Yep. You just keep telling yourself that the following morning.

I like to think it's working much like a colonic and helping to flush out all the undigested red meat up there, incinerating it at the same time.

Apparently there are more incidences of mouth and stomach cancer in countries that use a lot of them.

Doesn't put me off though, always have a supply of Nagas at the ready biggrin
