Hi from a old codger....
Trying to drag myself into the current century and have a Sony hard disc and DVD recorder. Now I find the instructions baffling at the best of times but, and here's the question I hope you can help with, if I want to record a TV programme onto a DVD to send to someone else who missed the programme, do I record it in DVD+, DVD-, DVD-R for the best chance of them being able to watch it?
Any help gratefully recieved

As I understand it, whatever type of disc is used, it should play in any DVD player.

The type of disc used depends on the recorder, but the written disc should conform to common standards. The exception is DVD-RAM which is housed in a cartridge.

To find out what kind of disc you need, check the specifications section at the back of the manual. Failing that, post the model number here and someone here will know.

not all older players with play -r +r without finalisation, if you finalise the disk, then most will view it just as a std dvd

Finalising is the key. It's not that easy to find on a Sony but RTM and it's easy. You also get the chance to name the disc.

I have a Sharp DVD-R recorder that I use to to record sky+ stuff I want to keep. Unfortunately the DVDs do not seem to work on any other DVD players we have, TV or computer.....

Sorry, 'Read the manual' because I can't from memory tell you which menu it's in. Maybe 'disc info'?

(It's only an insult if it's RTFM!)

RTFM ?

Pretty sure there is a finalise option as a non finalised disc will not be playable by anyone else
Older DVD players are very specific in what they can use, ask your friend what make and model of dvd player he has ?

modern dvd players seems to accept all cd's and dvd's

program might be quicker to get online smile

Thanks, the manual says that it produces one style and doesn't need manual formalising but does the other style and I would then need to manually formalise it. Best I suppose to do both and get the people to check...but if I want to keep a copy for myself....
