Chimaera-Tuscan-Cerbera
Discussion
Hello,
My name is Manfred and I live in Germany, near of Munich. Last year a bought a Chimaera 5.0, a really great car. I really love the hole TVR range. Now I think about a power improvement for the engine (cameshaft, Takara, etc.)or to buy a Tuscan or Cerbera. For me is not the hight end speed important but the acceleration form approx. 0-100 mph. What do think is there a big difference between a modi. Chimaera 5.0 a Tuscan or a Cerbera. If I could afford then I would buy all 3 cars :-), I hope you can read my English, it's not the best.
Best Regards from Munich

You're English is very good, and it's an interesting question.
I presume the Tuscan & Cerbera should be faster than a standard Chim, but then it depends on how much money you want to throw at the Chim to upgrade it.
Wazzal is close If we are talking just in a straight line - Tuscans have 320 - 365bhp (top spec healthy Sag S lump) and 270 - 310 ft/lbs. A 500 with a fair bit of work (no capacity increase) could get a bit over 300bhp but very good torque (they do get good torque pretty easily). One like this would not be far behind a mid power Tuscan. As for a Cerb, if we at talking healthy 4.5 then any Tuscan (bay a very good spec S engine) will not get close, as they have good power and fairly good torque (topr Tuscan Power and top modded 500 Torque). I presume the Tuscan & Cerbera should be faster than a standard Chim, but then it depends on how much money you want to throw at the Chim to upgrade it.
If you stretch the RV8 to 5.3 or 5.5 and do a stack of mods you will beat the Tuscan and close in on a std 4.5 Cerb (forget getting close to a Cerb RR or better), but this spec is very expensive.
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/profile.asp?h=0... is alot different

Have a look at the Fighting Torque (FT) results/discussions on the cerb forum. Comparing just TVR's, in general the SP6 engine cars were the quickest to launch so 0-100 they would in general be the quickest. However, after 1/4 mile some of the cerbs were able to catch up and overtake. The SP6 cars that ran at FT were from recollection all good well sorted cars and it was only really the 400+ bhp club 4.5 cerbs that caught them over the 1/4 mile. One 4.2 cerb was broadly on a par with the SP6 cars, but again this was a very sorted 4.2 being driven by someone who knew how to launch.
Hello,
and what do you think about the subjetice feeling is it similar to the measurements?
I driven some cars (for example BMW M3 343hp) that don't fell so fast, how is it with
the Tuscan and Cerbera? I haven't driven one.
What modification do you really notice wiht the Chimerad 5.0 engine? I read really some treads in
this forum, but I can find so much different solutions.
In the first week of April a stay for one week in England, perhaps I bring a new toy with me
to Germany :-)
Best Regards

Guten tag Manfred - wilkommen in Pistonheads!!
I too have a Chim 500 (which is currently undergoing some improvements), I have been lucky enough to drive both a Cerb and a Tuscan.
For shear speed and grunt you won't get better than a 4.5 AJP Cerb, and the Tuscan is certainly fast - but it's not a V8 and neither of them are roof down, soft top sports cars (unless you have a lot of money for the convertible Tuscan or a chainsaw for the Cerb!!!).
I seriously considered chaging my Chim for a Tuscan this year - they're great cars but I decided to improve my Chim instead. The reasons for this having talked to many people are;
1) I like the V8 - sound, torque etc
2) I like to take the top down when possible.
3) Finding a good Tuscan (with fully sorted SP6) could be a long and risky process.
4) With the mods I'm proposing I can spread the costs over 1,2 or even 3 years and end up with a car approaching 300bhp which will last another 50k miles.
If you look back on this forum only a week or 10 days you will find a thread titled "Taraka vs Stealth Cam" - have a look.
I should get my Chim back in a couple of weeks with V8 Developments Stealth Cam plus ACT Smoothbore induction, Racing Red Shocks and KN Filter - I'll post my first thoughts.
Hope this of help to you.

Freundlich Grussen. IanHi Ian,
this sounds great if you can report the difference after the modificationes. I also like a big torque
at a low level rpm, this fells good in the stomach :-) and of course the convertible is a good thing. I had contact also with V8 developments, RPI, TVR Power but until now I can't say what will be the right modification because I got some different answers. But I a littel bit carzy with cars and if i drive a Cerb or Tuscan and I am fascinated than i will probably buy it. If the difference is not so bib than i will keep my Chim because this is alos a really great car. I can't unterstand that the English buy Porsche instead of TVR?? Tey are so exeptional cars.
Best Regards
Manfred
and thanks for the many answers

Hi Manfred,
I changed from a Chim 400 to my Tuscan in October 2006.
Had to get a rebuild and a few other things and she is currently having some throttle body upgrades. Two more weeks waiting, its driving me crazy.
I always felt my "standard" 4lt Chimaera was and felt very fast but the Tuscan is another step up the ladder. Then again I have never driven a 5lt Chimaera
I still miss the V8 rumble but I do love the SP6 roar/scream.
By the way, I'm up near Braunschweig at the moment.

That sounds fantastic
Hi Manfred,
I am a Bayer in the UK- where are you based- I will bring my T 350 home to Germany later that year (close to Rosenheim) so you could see a standard but well behaved Speed 6 car compared to your Chim
If you want to look locally there is a guy who was importing TVRs in Dachau (as long as the factory was alive), he sorted them for TÜV (legal Exhausts etc)
I have experience with a 4.2 CERB and the T350 as a regular driver, a Tuscan (from a test drive) and a Griff 500 (modded) as a passenger
I never had a stopwatch with me but I can tell you what my perception is...
The Cerbera....
then the T350
and the Griffith and the Tuscan were on a similar level (obviously in a test drive you don´t put the foot down as brutally but I am sure dnb did not drive slowly with me in the car). The Cerbera just has this "düsenjägerartige" behaviour- sound, low down torque and simply now end on top (you could say in the Uk with speed limit this is normal but even on the A99 around Munich I could not max the Cerb (I got to roughly 175mph, though).
T T350 needs a bit longer to come into gear but pulls really strong from 3500 or so with similar top end performance, the V8 simply cannot follow up there. If you want top end performance and low rev grunt probably a 4 ltr S& or one of the new 4.3 Power conversions is for you. If you want to crush the opposition on the Autobahn get a Cerb- they way it pulls on at speeds when the BMWs run in their limiter makes you want to look in the rear view mirror more then would safe at these speeds
Don´t overlook the Sagaris if it is within your budget- if you can live with the looks it may be the answer to everything you are looking for
Cheers and Servus
