basic query driving me mad

creaking crank...or a creak from down there somewhere... what the best fix, it has a new BB...didn't seem to help though....

Possibly muck in the bearings of the BB if they're the external jobbies

I assume, you have checked and tightened the Crank bolts, All chain ring bolts, the pedals are tight and bearings are cool. Die you grease the BB when you fitted it and the bolts?

What Cranks, Type,? ie taper square, isoflex, etc.

Full sus? Maybe the creak is from your suspension joints rather than BB

mine was doing this a while back. The crank bolts had come loose on my Deore. A swift tightening solved it.

Thanks all, and apologies for lack of vital detail...

its a 2001 hardtail, with XTR crank (taper square I think - not hollow)... tightening the bolts will be my first point of call...
