There are many different views on this but what is the best way of re-sealing the sump?

Gasket - Yes or no?
High temp silicine only?
Red Hermetite only?
Combination of both?

Thanks in advance.

eyup Corin,

When I had the sump off the Landy I put it back on with a combination of both - a gasket and a thin smear of hemetite.
Not had any problems with it since, although I was surprised how much the bolts pinched up once I'd run it for a bit.

I always used a gasket; one side bonded to the pan and something like 'Hermerite Red' between the gasket and block: still wept though. I just apply a thin bead of an ordinary silicone sealant now: all dry.

I have a preference for gasket + vaseline, sealant is fine but a PITA to clean off next time you drop the sump.

I used a gasket + 3-bond sealant (like the Loctite, but I had it left over from Subaru gearbox rebuild)

The gasket broke up and leaked.

I've got the sump off now and it will be refitted with just 3-bond this time.

blue hylomar every time, tried gaskets and didn`t last long before the dripping started, changed to the blue stuff and its perfect, and does come off easy to if you remove the sump at a later dateyes

High temp silicone is used on all the VAG 1.8t engines and if done right works fine in my experience.
