oil

hi i have always used duckhams 20/50 in my mini but have just rebuilt an standard 1275 mg engine for my sons mini but wondered if 20/50 is to heavy for a new engine what should i use please and how long should it be used for?

There have been a few threads recently about oil preferences but my two pennyworth is that I have always used Castrol GTX. It used to be 20W/50 when I were a little lad but now seems to come in many different flavours including (I think) 15/40.
PS Don't listen to me as my engine is currently broke!!!!!
Maybe I should have used 20/50!
