...but I dont know if that engine is a "good 'un" or a "wrong 'un"

Is it at the top of its output or can it be squeezed a bit more?

I've just traded my Polo in for an Audi A3.

My Polo was the 1.4tdi 80pd and went very well and could have had that re-mapped if I'd wanted so guessing the 1.9tdi 100 will go pretty well as well. The audi I've just bought is a 1.9tdi 100 and is reasonably quick, so as the Polo is marginally lighter then performance should be good.

Had loads of fun in my Polo, good cars at the end of the day and cheap to run.

A good remap should see 130 horses or so. Not the best increase from a remap on a TD engine of this size, but not bad either. However, you'll get bootloads more torque, and you'll certainly notice and be pleased with that.
If I had one, I definitely would smile

The 1.9tdi engine is one that vag has used for years.

It is totally bullet proof, I used to have an old-shape 1.9TDI 130 A3 which covered 80k before it got sold with effortless ease, never missed a beat. A friend has a Skoda Fabia 1.9TDI, again same engine hasn't missed a beat, and another friend has the 104bhp version of the 1.9TDI in a caddy van and has done 210k which just a new turbo hose needed.

And its awesome on fuel, expect 50+mpg combined unless you drive like Sebastien Loeb.

I really like the idea of these little cars - fully miserly on fuel but still torquey enough for good long distance progress.

If regularly serviced and not spanked from cold they don't really go wrong. Air flow meters and injectors can get dodgy at big big big mileage but they're so common that parts are not expensive.
