Hi All,

I've been given first dibs on a pals car - He's just bought a Cayenne for the Mrs and her car is now surplus to requirements...

It's a 1997 A6 Avant 2.4 SE.

Full Audi Service History
74k miles
new tyres
Mot & tax to July
few minor scratches etc - but nothing serious.
Manual - not tiptronic
cloth seats

He's offered it to me for £1600, as it's literally sat on his parents drive gathering dust! - which I think I should take up - seems a bargain to me. It does need a service and that's about it.

2 Questions;

1) Can you get 3 Childs seats in the back? We have a baby due in May!

2) Any likely things to check for - I can't find much in the way of things to be concerned about on the interweb!

Cheers,

Jamie

Not bad, the 2.4 sounds sweet in the C5 A6, the Avant still looks great too and with 74,000mi on the clock? That's fantastic. The cloth seats can look tired easily too, our old '99 A6's cloth seats got stained easily somehow and it never came out. I think the price is pretty good, we px'ed ours for £2,500 - No remote key (stolen 2weeks previous) slightly corroded wheels (common problem on teh highly polised 15" alloys) and 110/115,000mi. The only things to watch out for that I can think of is water coming into the front passenger footwell due to the drainige gulley under the plastic under the windscreen getting blocked and water coming in through an air filter. Easily sorted though. At around 100,000mi watch out for the expensive (£1000) ABS Pump and not so expensive MAF (you'll notice sudden loss of power and then it'll be back very quickly). As for rear seat space, it'll definately be a tight squeeze for 3 child seats accross the back, as I suppose with most cars. 2 or 3 years ago we for some reason had 2 childseats in the back and me in the middle in the back, at the time I was about 6' and it was possibly the most uncomfortable journey I've ever made. (Even more uncomfotable than 3 abreast in the back of a 98 Punto with someone lying accross us)

Brilliant thanks.. I think I've already made up my mind really!! I'm going to have a good look at it tomorrow and check it all over and see whats what.

The car seat issue is one that bugs me....we are required by law to have car seats and rightly so - surely car designers should be taking that into account and making 'family' cars a tiny bit wider to try and accomodate...

Great cars. Good buy. I had a 1.8T for 6 years. Cloth wears far better than leather!

Looks odd with that aftermarkete headunit though - will the 'door' close over it?

Nice one, my mates Mum has one almost identical to that, same age, but hers at 160k is in a pretty poor state, Aaand it has the horrible blue interior... Yuck! We had that cloth in our old 1.8T, just don't spill Tizer on it. Makes a horrible mess... *whistels* Martins Audi eh, take it your fairly local then, our 2.4 came through them.

Erm......NO! - Head does come off though..so just put it in the house at night etc.

And, the unit is clearly far more powerful than the rest of the system, as when you change radio stations etc, you get a loud electrical blip noise for a split second. Doesn't seem to bother the mrs though, she loves it!

This is the 2nd Audi we've had and I'd forgotten how solid they are! I can't believe it's nearly 10 years old...it genuinely feels about 3 years old!

Martins Audi - they are local to them - We live in Dorset! Although I do work up near Heathrow...hence my smoker barge Jag XJ8 for those trips up the A303 and M3!

£1600, now that is a bargain!

Note when did it last have a timing belt change? Great family car the A6 C5 avant... we have racked 118k on our 1.8T variant in 3 and a bit years, wears the miles really well and still drives good.

well, according to the service book at the last service, but there is no mention of a timing belt on the invoice and pal being a complete numpty when it comes to cars doesn't know.

I'll get it done at our local Audi Specialist at the next service (due in 4k miles or so).

Tis a bit thirsty though! I think we got about 300 miles on a tank the other day - and it was about £65 to fill up. Still, not complaining sounds meaty.

I'm assuming it's a sleeved version of the 2.8 V6 in the A6 and the A8? Just wondering how to squeeze some more horses out of it....K&N filter perhaps?

Yeah, ours manages about 350 ish miles from 70litres.
Do you not think it has to be revved a bit to sound better, ours only sounds decent about 2500rpm or so and its really quiet. frown Sounded great when dad was giving it some beacking up the drive earlier though..!

it does sound fruity doesn't it?!

Have been driving it a bit lately and it does seem to struggle low down - it does like to be revved. I am always finding myself in too high a gear...

I think that's cause I drive the Jag all week with nearly twice the bhp! Anyway, it's very nice and does sound meaty!

lol, ours is so quiet my mum drove 4mi in 1st gear at about 6000rpm haha!
And one time driving up over the South Downs past Goodwood Racecourse the fuel light pings on, Mum says 'Oooh, we'll easily make it home, I am NOT filling this pig up!' I glance at the gear lever *3rd*, I glance at the Rev counter *5750rpm*, I glance at the Trip Computer *13.5MPG* 'Errr, not driving like this you won't!'

13.5mpg?!! gawd all mighty!

What are you getting incidently on average mpg? Ours doesn't have the computer...

My 4 litre Jag V8 does about 23mpg - costs £75 to fill and I get about 350 miles on a tank.

The Audi cost about £65 at the weekend to fill and I think the last tank we got about 315 miles - but it was right on the needle stop....I had visions of pushing it onto the pump!
