I've owned quite a few small point and shoot cameras over the last 5/8 years or so, HPs, Samsungs and more recently Canons.

I'm looking for a camera that has a reasonably good optical zoom so that I can take photos at track days etc.

I've had quite a few of the Canon Ixus range (50,55, and more recently the 850IS which I sold to my sister about 6 months ago.

Now fed up of borrowing cameras and I was looking at the Ixus 950IS which looks very good, but I'm a bit worried about the strength of the flash (Main problem with my previous Ixus')

Any other suggestions within this budget (circa £200 ceiling)? Cheers smile

I have a Fuji S8000FD.

Its a nice step up from a point and shoot, and it should cost about £170. Its a little bigger than todays compacts, as there is a lens on the front which extends out to about 20cm!

Thats at full zoom, which is stated to be 18X which is about the most you can get. It also has mechanical and software 'anti-shake' on it which really does work. I have tried out the wide angle and macro lengths too, and been pleased with all the results.

How do you find the Fuji lasts on batteries? One thing I liked about my previous Ixus was the battery life? A friend has a similar model to the S8000 and I hadn't really considered it!!

It depends what you are doing. A lot of what I do the camera is on constantly and zooming in and out and focusing a lot. I guess I get 150 shots before the battery sign comes on, and it lasts a long time after that, and its not yet died on me.

It takes 4 standard AA batteries. I bought 4 energiser high-power rechargables and they are good, and I have a load of others as spares. At the highest quality setting at fine, and 8MP the 1GB card included takes 240 shots or thereabouts.

The model 'below' numberswise I here is a 10X zoom but is a manual focus. It depends what you are using it for. For motorsports the 8000 should be good as the autofocus is pretty fast. I have been taking photos of wildlife though and sometimes it gets fooled by different tree branches in the foreground and background, but I guess that is difficult for any camera to read my mind! The manual focus I guess would solve that.

was thinking about an ixus myself, but finally went for the fuji s6500fd after having considered the s8000fd..an excellent camera which has had many good reviews. I was tempted after seeing some of the shots on amazon.co.uk
