Opened the garage door to find a flat battery. Was thinking of buying the above tomorrow to charge the battery.. does anybody know if this is suitable for the job, and how long will it take to charge?? (Chim 500)

Thanks,

From your description what you're looking for is a battery charger. That Jump Starter sounds like something designed to start a car that has a flat battery i.e. a completely different job.

Yes your right, was looking for something to charge in-situ flat battery...rather than jump start, as I hear this isnt good on the cats.

That's an Accumate you want then, they are around £45 or less, www.tvrmonster.com had some and track car solutions or tvr car parts or even clever Trevor, basically most places have them and you can connect it very easily.
Just had a look at your profile, try Tony Abrahams at Hexham Horseless Carriages, he should have one.

Try Here this is the cheapest I could find.

Nothing at all wrong with jump starting it, won't do the cats any harm at all. What you're thinking about is the old wives tale that BUMP starting the car is bad for the cats, which is also rubbish.

You're talking about three different things here:

  1. Booster pack lets you start a car that has a flat battery, provides the massive 500A current needed to turn the engine over but only for a few seconds.
  2. Battery charger lets you charge a flat battery, provides 5-10A for a couple of days and slowly charges the battery up - if left connected long term it will boil the battery dry.
  3. Battery conditioner will monitor the battery voltage and provide the occasionally 0.01A trickle needed to overcome leakage.
You need to decide which one(s) you need.

Not necessarily. Accumate is a battery conditioner, designed to keep an already charged battery fully charged. I asume it will take an age to recharge a de-charged battery, if it will do it at all.

Thanks for the posts. Originally, I was thinking of a charger which I could connect up overnight, charge the battery and hopefully start her up in the morning. As the garage, is a distance from the house leaving a live cable across public property for longer than this is probably not wise. Hence, the original B&D pack which I thought may be up to the job. However, the jump start kit also sounds ok - but I was i) worried regarding possible cat damage and ii) thought with a battery charger, there may be less problems with the alarm.

Thanks,

Karl.

Sorry, the title of my post, should have referenced the B&D 10 Amp Batter Charger, not the jump starter - but from the sounds of it, this may also be suitable, to get her up and running.

Actually moved now to N.Yorkshire, but may go for the jump starter option. Does the device have an automatic cut-off to prevent the current being drawn for longer than a few seconds? And will the alarm be easy to reset once its fired up?

Many thanks,

Karl.

When we started a Chimaera 400 from completly flat the alarm went off straight away, all we did then was press the remote button and then started the car, once started we disconected the power pack, the pack would only start it once, possibly twice with a single charge.
