Firmwares are usualy updated by loading it onto a memory card (specific direcory mebe)and putting it into the camera/switching on.

It can brick your camera if it goes wrong btw.

Usualy each revision will list exactly what it does, and (with canon) this is always to address faults (dont think they've ever added features).

Unless an update addresses an issue you may be experiencing I'd leaev it well alone.

300d has 'hacked' firmwares out that allows more functionality ala 10D.

Yup - updated firmware on both my Nikons.

Well aware that it can go horribly wrong so RTFM and read it again!!!

Not had any problems, and with Nikon you normally expect two files and you have to install them the right way round.

No doubt Canon make it a lot easier smile

You can check which firmware your camera has and see if it's the latest one. I believe it should be updated to the latest one whether the update is relevant to you or not. You can also download the instruction from Canon site. It's pretty simple. Most important thing is connect the camera to the mains or have fully-charged battery.
