Got a useful tip the other day from a cab driver re using car ramps. He uses this himself and not just a tip from a punter.

When using car ramps one of the problems is that they slip forward when going up them unless thay are well chocked which isnt easy to do at times.

What this guy uses is a length of rope attached to each ramp that is as least as long as the car wheel base. He then lays the rope out and drives over the rope as he approaches the ramps. The weight of the car stops the ramps shooting forward as the rope is under the rear wheels. Seems simple enough.

I would prefer a 4 post lift though if I had the room!!

If only my car would go onto my ramps before the front hit them.

Idea is fantastic though.

I always use a strip of old carpet instead of rope.

Place some old bits of wood infront of the ramps to drive onto and raise the front a bit.

Stops the bodywork hitting the ramp before the tyres do.

If you are using ramps made of short pieces of angle iron you can buy extensions for them to help with ground clearance problems.Tempus

Great idea, but I have to ask, how did you get onto that subject with a cab driver?

"You'll never guess who I had in my cab yesterday. A bloke with two ramps and some old rope. Well, I said, you're going up in the world . . . "

I laugh when i think that people still actually use these awful things, let alone give tips on them.
you get the car on them and theres still only a 12" gap under it!!!!
Hardly enough for some of the lardies on PH from what I gather,by their own admittion.

(easy for me to say I`ve got two 4 posters a 2 poster, and some 5ft axle standseek AND I didn`t eat all the pies)

but heres one any waybiggrin
sometimes you get half way up them and one will slide forwards, because they always seem to be smooth underneath.

weld a two inch strip of steel across the front rung to get you started in the first place and then weld small`blobs along the base runners on both sides, about 4" apart.

these blobs then dig in and stop them shooting out and killing the cat as you are halfway up.

I'll e-mail you a picture of some ramps that dont slide away and the front wont ground on when you go up them.
