I think the worse cars for having their fog lights are young lads in their Citroen VTRs.

"Havin' the fog lights makes it look like pukka rally car, mate"

Yeah, who do they think they're kidding!?

Yeah, this really gets me - Vectra drivers are another bunch who think they're Colin McRae. I usually flash my lights repeatedly to tell them they're tossers. I once ended up in a car park, being followed by a guy with his foglights blazing away. I got out, and politely strolled over to him and pointed out that it wasn't foggy - turns out he couldn't find the on/off switch on the Astra dash - I must admit, it was well hidden in a sort of ridged piece of fascia plastic. I had to find it for him....

Gotta admit that rear fogs on when its not foggy really grates me. But some times the front fogs can be usefull, like when its icey makes it a bit easier to spot ice on the road, the lower light possition seems to reflect off the ice better than headlights. just a thought...

Although front fogs are a bind the rear ones are worse for me. I think 9 times out of 10 they don't realise they are on (wots that red light on the dash for?). Also people who can't find the hand brake whilst waiting at lights.

I often try and flick my fogs on and off once I have overtaken a car with rear fogs on (you know the one, they have had the fogs on since that spot of fog two weeks ago) but I am sure no one has a clue what I am trying to tell them..

If memory serves it is illegal to drive with Fogs on when there is no fog.

My 914 (sorry all) had them but they were referred to as "Driving Lights" in the book. And it was fair enough really as without them the headlights were Pants.
I agree with everyone else about these people who have them on for show though..
..perhaps we can put them in the same bracket as the morons who sit in traffic queues in the dark with their foot on the brake pedal instead of using the handbrake for five minutes so you get a suntan off their high level/intensity brakelights..?

Two types of annoying people that do this...
a) those who drive manuals who are too bl**dy lazy to use the handbrake and
b) those like me who drive an auto (when not driving the 450!) and are just stupid and forget that it takes as much effort to put the car in neutral/park and then use the handbrake as it does for those a) drivers to put in neutral and apply the handbrake!!

I can't believe I've just slagged myself off for that

in your (and my) defence it has to be said that all autos have a lag of 1-2 seconds before they supply power. I tend to stay on the footbrake if I'm in front so as to get away quicker.

Me too, when I had a 928. But embarrassed myself hugely several times by over use of loud pedal, trying to overcome the 'auto-lag'. Sideways departure from lights doesn't go down too well in three-lane traffic!

To my mind rear fogs are for being seen, fronts are to see with.
The last time I drove in fog bad enough to need to see the road immediately in front of the car was in 1971, (though I take the point about ice). Surely if the fronts are for being seen they should be yellow. The rules regarding rear fogs are that they should be used in conditions of 100m or less visibility (which happens once or twice a year at most?).
A lot of the 'rear' culprits are the trilby-hatted 'I'm a conscientious responsible motorist' types, while 'front' offenders are generally under 25 'look at me' types.

Ive noticed older people doing it as well though like i say that bloody renault ad dont help , garage door goes up fog lights go on . as for vectra drivers and astra drivers with fogs on these muppets have to manually switch them on every time they drive as they automaticly switch off when you turn the lights off (i know this ive got an astra )

Anyone who drives a BMW 3 series like to comment? I've always wondered whether the ****wits who seem to have their fog/driving lights on all the time do it deliberately (in case the street/motorway lighting isn't good enough for them

Well, I've got a 3 series ('92 vintage) and the dipped beam is so poor I'm beginning to think they may have a point. Only joking - I'll get some brighter bulbs.

Reardrive, I agree! I've just bought a 3 series and the lights are totally cr@p (I have no fogs). What is the solution? There is not enough "spread" on dip, and on main the beam is too "funnelled". Replacements offering 30% uprate are still not going to be good enough. Will have to try 100 watt dips, and then get flashed for dazzeling! No win situation.

Just to stick my penn'orth in, when I had an MG Maestro the rear fog light switch was a 'soft' switch that automatically turned off when the ignition was cut. Each time you needed them the lights had to be switched on, thus were never 'left on'.

For front lights there are two types of light, fog lights which have a diffused beam and should only be used in fog or other bad conditions such as snow, and driving lights which are a directional beam. Driving lights are useful but need to be correctly adjusted. If I remember correctly the law says front fog lights can only be used in conjunction with dipped headlights and driving lights can only be used in conjunction with main beam. Perhaps John Robson could comment?

Sounds like a poor excuse to me as it takes a second or so for the lights to get from amber to green anyway.. faster reaction time training required perhaps

Give some thought to the poor guy behind you who's getting a migraine (if it's me that is )

In defense of the Saxo VTR driving yoof (my 20 year old brother has one) it is very easy to accidentaly turn on the front fogs when you turn on the headlights, as the controls for fronyt fogs and headlights are right next to each other on the left hand stalk, both needing twisting in the same direction to turn them on - a design flaw. Not that it means the w*nkers who drive with them on aren't doing it deliberately of course.

My brother once went up to some rude boy barrys who were parked outside McDonalds in between 'cruising' round town in their clapped out xr2s with their foglights on and said 'Do you know if the feds see you driving with them on, you'll get fined mate' they said cheers, turned them off, then 5 mins later sees them doing it again!

I've said it before and I'll say it again - make it illegal to fit foglights to hatchbacks and BMWs and you'll solve the problem

Although I agree with you, its not just fog lamps, but driving lights in general that have me wondering if the driver in front is too closely related to a gibbon.

I was in the right-hand overtaking lane of the M6 on Friday night, on a stretch with no lighting and along comes this utter tit in an Audi A6, sitting right on my tail and flashing his lights at me.

Despite the obvious signal that he would quite like to get past, I was unable to comply, having been temporarily blinded by his xenon headlights on full beam.

As the blurriness faded I could just make out an ugly, angry primate behind the wheel gesturing wildly that I should move over and let him through. I could, of course, be mistaken. Perhaps he was trying to express his concern at my car control, given that I had wandered half way out of the lane (fortunately the road was not that busy) whilst trying to abate the stinging sensation in my eyes. Not being able to see properly I honestly couldn't tell you.

And he had his front fogs on. What a monkey.
