Hi All,

How do games get started on COD4? I know you can host your own private game with friends but how would you or can you host your own game open to anyone???

I thought that the host was allocated dynamically depending on the ping of each user unless you host a private match.

I wondered this

I assumed it was defaulted to 10 minutes and 750 points

I believe I hosted 1 or 2 yesterday but can find no way of actually creating your own.

Go to Private match (one below Find match) there's an option to change time, points, hardcore etc it's all there. You don't get lag but you also don't rank up.

I think the first person to enter a public lobby is host.

All multiplayer games on the PS3 have dedicated servers, so I don't think any of the players are the actual "host".

I don't think its the same on the xbox, I think only EA have dedicated srvers and all other games are peer2peer... I could be wrong though wink

You can only change game settings in a private game, not public.

how do you know if you're the host?

On the couple of occasions that I have been first into the lobby (am I host then?) when the game has started it ends immediatly with host ended game - but I didn't end the game! So, now when I'm first into a lobby i leave immediately in case it happens again.

I'm not sure you can, it's the same in Halo3, they check everyones connections to everyone else and see who has the best connection and they are chosen as host.

So when the "host has stopped game" message appears, does that mean the person chosen as host just left the game?

I think the ps3 version works the same, the same "host has ended game" is a problem for ps3 gamers too. I cannot imagine EA being able to afford to run servers for free for a popular game such as this.

Yup. In halo3 the bungie matching system pauses everyone and finds a new suitable host in Cod4 you all get booted frown

I've noticed this, i wonder if it lets everyone gather in the lobby before selecting a host (presumably, the person with the best connection quality).

I don't think it only happens when someone leaves. The lag problems we've had since before crimbo are down to the servers being packed out at peak times. At certain times of the night you notice the host ended game the majority of games. I honestly don't believe people are leaving more often at peak times and that its mostly due to xbox live being totally gay.

yes

Yesterday I was playing during the afternoon for a bit and had a "Host has ended the Game" message about 7 times in a row. Very frustrating and I reckon more down to xboxlive than a person actually leaving, a thought that was backed up by us returning to a full lobby without anyone new joining.

True, aswell as everyone being connected together for that game, you also need someone (the host most likely) to contact the ladder servers so your head shots, score etc can be updated.
