360 won't play divx/xvid anymore

I took my 360 round a mates so he could convince his missus it was worth upgrading from a ps2. I usually use VGA but had to switch to component (1080i) for his telly, changed a few network bits and bobs, and sound setting. Get it back home, VGA back in, fix the network bobbins, set the sound back to normal. The 360 plays all my usual wmv transcodes from before the divx patch, but none of the divx files now play. Seems like a video issue, in that my telly acts like it's trying to detect a new source (the input text appear), and then the screen goes black. I can hear the soundtrack, but no video. FWIW, his telly was 1080i, whereas mine is 1200 x 768 (yeah, it's a basically a pikey monitor with a tv module), so the idea floating around my head is that it's trying to play at too high a res for my tv. However, when I back out of the video, the usual dashboard interface reappears.

If someone could advise, I'd be chuffed, as I want to avoid a) having to reset to factory settings or b) going back to transcoding.

From what your saying it sounds like the 360 is using a different video resolution to playback video, have you tried altering the resolution setting, even to something low like 640x480 to see if it makes a difference ?

Will try it when I get gome - so far, I've only tried 1200 x 720 and 1200 x 768, and it made no difference.

This sound vaguely like the problem i had with a few demos, were you use the bogo-standard composite/scart cable they give you, switch to 60hz and then switch to VGA cabling and find that some games complain about the now irrelevant 60hz setting.

Hitman did that iirc.
