Can anyone recommend something fairly simple, preferably free, for chopping clips up and adding text effects/captions?

Gotta be windoze movie maker - free and the latest version is bug free (almost). You can do most things, except pic in pic and time shift.

PS... It may already be on your computer.

You have to get the latest version (free from MS) - it's miles more stable and having used about 10 video editing progs - it's by far the simplest to use.

But as I'm sure you know... 2 GB ram and lots GB HD is really the starting point if you have large files. (If you don't have memory and HD space, any prog will just crash when you start to render)

Cheers. More questions:
1) Whats the latest version? Mine (according to movie maker help) is version 6, build 6.0. I found 2.1 available for xp, not sure where to download a new version for vista. Keeps crashing, havent been able to use it once, crashes each time I try to import a file (tried half a dozen times now, avi and wmv)

2) What other apps might I be able to download, even if they require purchasing. I really am looking for the easiest app with the smallest learning curve, as its only something Id like to play with and probably wont go back to or every use seriously.

I've found Nero Recode and Nero Vision (Express) work with pretty much anything I've thrown at it
