This one:
EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
That is an appropriate one for a EOS 400D, right?

I think we all like Kerso on ebay.

It looks like it's not listed atm, so it's worth sending him an email. I think Canon lenses carry international warranty, so where you purchase it shouldn't be a problem.

There're TWO 70-300 IS USM lenses:-
The old 70-300, which I've got. Should be c.£350-400 from a UK online retailer. Very good zoom lens, doesn't go as soft at the top-end as the Sigma/Tamron competition, IS is handy to have if you like motorsport, and its' autofocus is quick-enough for a non-L-series lens.
I'll let someone a bit more seasoned tell you if there're any 'better' lenses to look out for 2nd hand (e.g. 70-200L IS).
Then there's the 70-300 DO (Diffractive Optics), which is about a year old, twice the price, and quite a bit more compact. Not sure if it's much sharper/quicker or if it's just the size/weight improvement.

The DO is expensive and isnt any bettre than the non DO apart from AF I think, smaller tho. Diffractive optics hasnt proved such a worthwile effort for canon. The old 70-300, which I've got. The 70-300IS replaced a line of 75-300's (one early one I have) which were woefull.
IQ wise the new one is close to the f4L and is almost as fast (up to 200mm) tho poorly built in comparison and having much slower AF.
Theres not a lot in the 300mm zoom range with IS thats better for anywhere near the cash I think.

Amazon have them for about £380, Warehouseexpress have them for £369.
If you want to buy from a high-street store then it might be worth seeing how close to those prices they can get

As for the perennial 70-300 f4-5.6 Vs. 70-200 f4L (about £460) question goes, there was a thread fairly recently, here.
I have a 70-300 f4-5.6 and i'm very happy with it

Cheers.
