Went out yesterday to have a play with a new lens. While I was wandering, I saw this scene and thought if I could get a decent pic it'd be the sort of thing my parents would like framed.

I didnt get the whole pic though (ie the top of the tree), so as more seasoned photographers would you return for another go at it, or try and border it so the tree doesnt look so cut up?

Andy,

Its only my opinion, but I think this crop makes a nicer job of framing the focal point, ie the spire ........

I like that crop but would have to rotate it CW so the spire is upright.

Interesting shot and cropping. It reminds me of this painting by Monet -

Personally I think it needs more space on the right hand side to balance out the shot. I'm not sure about the spire, though that certainly makes it an unusual shot, gives you a focal point and something to think about.

It's an impossible ask mate... getting the tree in from that distance would make the spire tiny. So either step back a long way with a telephoto lens, or just crop... I can see several crops that would work really well. It's a great pic, just have a play.

I really like this...and wouldn't even think about the top of the tree

Its part of Newstead Abbey near Kirkby. This is the spire

I was walking back from this waterfall

and just happened to see it peeping between the branches so thought it'd be a decent shot. It's not really my sort of thing, but thanks for the compliments.

I'm going to go back when there's more light and see if I can get another go at it. Appreciate those who have said crop it, I think I'll see if I can get it again and put that next to a crop

Good, think I managed to sneak the other shots in there nicely

Your waterfall shot is stunning. Newstead Abbey's just down the road from me as I'm in Nottingham.

Nice one Andy, looks good. I just infraredded(?) it, and darkened the sky a bit while trying to make pancakes so didn't get too adventurous!

D'oh! I never took the hint. I gave up posting on the competition thread when the best shot I have ever taken never got a single reaction hehe

Maybe I will post that one then if you think I should biggrin

Yours is a good 'un from what I remember on the site. You should post it - I'm not putting mine in the comp and from a quick search your last go was March? It's a year on, maybe worth a go!

Newstead Abbey's worth a wander around too if you get the chance, would be interesting to compare what you get out of it.

I've only had a "proper" camera (and a D40 at that) for around a month or so, never really played with Paintshop or any other processing packages before. I just clicked a few shots and went wild with the contrast button really
