I know the subject has been covered before somewhere but I'm a bit confused about the schedule for changing the cambelt on a 2004 allroad 2.5 TDI. The car is four years old next month and I've been told by an independent Audi/VW garage it needs a new cambelt. But the mileage is 45,000 and the service book says the belt change is due at 80,000. To change or not to change?

I think it's 80,000 or four years.

yep 4 yrs or 80k whichever first

i would get it changed as if it breaks then the dealer will say even though it is under mileage it over 4 years so you wont be able to claim and will have to pay the full repair cost.

Somehow i think you will have to pay the full repair cost in any case, unless you can prove it was dealers fault, which would be difficult.

Had mine done at the end of last year. Flippin' expensive. Apparently they need to take off much of the front end to get the job done. But at least they gave me a tin of boiled sweets by way of thanks for my custom... rolleyes

Oh, and when you're getting quotes, make sure they include the water pump etc. Some of the dealers I got quotes for included it in their quoted price while others didn't.

How much? And was it a main dealer or independent specialist?

My AllRoad's gone into an independent for its four year cambelt change today, mileage is about 40,000. Four Circles in Bristol, can't fault them, car collected from home, courtesy car left until they deliver AllRoad back and FOC.

That looks like a good price to me. Mine was about £350 more at a London main dealer. (More fool me for going to the main dealer, I guess...)
