What a brilliant game. Has anyone else played it??
Before Christmas I saw this item on the shelves in GAME but was too poor to buy it. I have taken to buying what games look good on the shelves rather than what the magazines say to get as for some reason it works for me.
After I got some money together in January I boldly walked in and (after asking for it because I couldn't find it, grr) furnished GAME with £25 for it - in fact this included £5 extra for the collectors edition which includes amongst other things an actual piece of the Berlin wall! You can judge me how you wish for doing that, I think it's cool. Anyway, the box showed a top-down style click-your-troops-around-a-map affair like many others, but with brilliant looking graphics and playing the game has revealed exactly that. However it's slightly different to command and conquer in that you don't build a base or power stations or anything. You only have to deal with ordering in troops which arrive by airdrop 20 seconds later, into friendly zones only. You take them into battle and if a unit dies there's a time delay and then your 'reinforcement points' are awarded back and you can replace the unit with another the same or different. Additionally you can regularly call in artillery, napalm, tank busters to an area of the map you select as a sort of 'fire support'.
It's set in the cold war, as if Russia attacked the US, so the missions take place in real life areas of Europe, Russia and the US. The graphics are amazing; directx 10 if you have it. I only have a dx9 card but it's still amazing - explosions look really lifelike and sometimes you just sit back and watch a battle happen because it's so pleasant looking. Not only that but the buildings and terrain are deformable. Some maps are in towns/cities and as well as being able to can send troops into any and every building, you can destroy each and every building which then explodes into a blackened hulk. The ground is also destructible, so if artillery attack a zone and you drive your tanks through afterwards, they'll be driving down into a crater.
Anyway, very impressed and the multiplayer impressed again - it's not a boring/slow 1-on-1 that you would expect, but instead a full-on battle with up to 8 players each side. Each player gets their own reinforcement points and commands their own troops. You all work together (ideally) to capture objectives and wipe out the enemy, or more commonly all do your own things and get wasted and lose! In multiplayer you have to play a role, such as infantry (you can only order infantry style units), armor (tanks), support (artillery etc) and so on. Works very well.

WIC is a video card killer so i didnt get very far in the demo as the frame rate was shite (using a clocked 7800GT) - although it looked like a laugh.
Command and conquer tiberium wars is where its at for me right now
You on the Xbox 360 with that?Command and conquer tiberium wars is where its at for me right now

If so fancy a game with Polarbert & I?

Slowride - i have that game too, fancy a 3 way (!) at some point? i'm totally shit at it though so you might have to go easy on me.
Looks like we could have a 4 way battle if the other chaps on-line.
I don't know when I'll be on-line again though, Sunday for sure. I would tonight but want to watch that docu-drama about the Somme on sky.
Weird that you struggled for framerate on a 7800
I have a far inferior X800 GTO with a dual core athlon and it runs smoothly (30-50fps) at 1360x768 with a little bit of AA and low to medium settings (which still looks frankly stunning except for real close ups can be a bit blurred). Beforehand I had a single core athlon and it was quite a bit worse. I was going to get a new Radeon 3850 but don't think there's much point now - the money was better spent on the processor upgrade it turns out. The loading times also went down from about 50-60 seconds to about 20 as well which is bloody fantastic. Dual core rocks. I'm on directx9 with this gfx card of course - worth setting yours to that if the 7800 is defaulting to dx10?
Anyway, I can only urge you all to check out WIC if you've ever enjoyed any RTS game, the eye candy really moves things on and multiplayer game play's top notch too which gives it longevity. Looks like this "Games for Windows" thing might have some merit.
