Cheers

As far as i know, the power output of the 2litre pinto as fitted to ford sierras etc, was 98bhp @ 5500rpm.

The zetec was around 110bhp mark IIRC.Anyone???

The twin cam 2.0litre 8 valve engine as fitted to granadas was rated at 108 bhp.

If i find out differently ill post it here.

The 2.0L injection Pinto managed a scary 115bhp. Still weighed more than the average skyscraper though.

There were two versions of the 1.8 Zetec, the basic one fitted to most models, Mondeo, bas Escort etc. was 115 bhp, the one fitted to the Escort Si. (and possibly other models) was 130bhp.

If this is for a Locost/7 etc. then it has to be the Zetec, the Pinto is just far too heavy for what is supposed to be a light car.

I am going to stick my neck on the block and answer this assuming you mean what can you easily achieve with both engines....... Sorry if this is not what you're after.

2.0 pinto - Running 45 Webers, bit of head work, racy cam you can get an easy 150 - 160 hp. With a lot of work you will get 180 - 210 hp, but this is a lot of work.

1.8 Zetec. Standard, these are 115, but Ford also did the 130 spec engine which had different cams. If you stick a set of 40 DCOE webers on with an aftermarket ECU you will easily (and reliably) get 155hp. With additional head work, etc I think 180hp+ is easily achieved.

I am currently contemplating 1.8 or 2.0l zetec to go in my car, if you need any advice in sticking this engine in a kit car, drop me a line I have a lot of info regarding what you need and where to get it from.

Chars,
Mark B

Oh, I would defo go Zetec, just because it is more modern and therefore probably cheaper to maintain and less likely to cause grief in the future.

Pinto's are heavy, but they are now so cheap and plentiful, that they are almost a serviceable part. Assuming it doesn't take anything else out, 50GBP gets you another engine, and you just move the 'tuning' parts.

Best option for a first time kit, if money is tight, as they are simple, cheap and can give reasonable power (with a 16v head 250bhp is possible, but probably not a good road engine)

I also think the later Sierra ones were 105hp, but I may remember wrong...

Cheers for the replies guys.

But to take it a step further, how much work would it take to get 150Bhp from a 1.8 Zetec?

The spec for the Engine I am considering is
Twin Weber 45 Carbs and wild cams.

Would there be anything else needed?
Cheers
Stuart.

I think you'd atleast need some headwork aswell as the twin 45s and cams.
Just to stick up for the Pinto, aswell as being cheap and relatively user-friendly, it's not that much heavier than other similar engines. I know weight does matter with any car, but 10kg extra doesnt make that much difference, and can be lost elsewhere.

You should be able to get 155hp from a 1.8 zetec with a Webcon kit. Make sure the engine is a 1.8 '130 spec' engine. These had different cams in already, or as you say you could go for wild cams from the aftermarket. You wouldn't necessarily need 45's either although a lot of people say that 40's are a little over jetted for the 1800.

Email me off list if you want any help, I have been reading up a lot....

I will be going 1800 zetec, twin 40 DCOE's and a Ford ECU to get it running. I will then upgrade to full 3D management in the future. This should give me about 145hp, going to 155hp in the future.

With a bit of head work, I think 180hp is quite easily acheived from the 1800.

A 2 litre Zetec weighs around 125kg. The only refernces to the Pinto I can find is the American made 2.3litre unit which weighs in at 190kg. The block is the same as the 2.0litre so the UK version isn't going to weigh much less. They really are shockingly heavy.

Thanks.

I think some more research is needed. But that is very good groundwork info there.

It'll be a while before anything comes of it, but Hopefully it won't be too long.

right,
130 Spec engine and 40's

I've got the latest 2 ltr Focus Zetec in my Westie with throttle bodies and Emerald ECU.All set up with only aftermarket Big end bolts on a standard engine, albeit a steel lightweight flywheel is 186bhp.Runs sweet and not cams or porting needed.Cam change would just scrape the 200 bhp,but I'm happy as it runs about 38mpg on a steady run and is very smooth.

Mr2Mike, there is no way in hell that the Pinto 2 litre weighs 190kg. I dont think the Cologne and Essex V6's even weigh that much!
A couple of months ago i was in a similar situation to this (although it was for my Mk2 Escort) so tried to find as much info i could on weights of engines etc. I managed to find a few websites (will try and find links later) that quoted the 2.0 OHC motor as weighing approx 145kg. I know this is more than the average 2 litre engine, but as i said, 10 (or 20kg in the Zetecs case) difference still isnt that much.
I did decide to go with the Pinto in the end, but mainly for ease of installation, tradition, and cost - If they werent an issue i'd probably go for a Duratec.
