I am looking for a new digital camera to replace my Sony T7 which I bought 2 yrs ago. It's still working fine, but I have not been impressed with the quality of shots especially in low light conditions where almost every shot comes out blurred. I am looking to spend upto £250 (a little more for the right camera). It has to be easy to carry around without being too bulky. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Looking at the T7 it's a very slim camera - which probably explains why it's poor in low light conditions.

My advice would be to look at the Canon PowerShot range. They are bigger cameras (without being SLRs!), but they'll give you the quality you're looking for.

Ah - well one brand that keeps popping up when this is asked around here is the Panasonic Lumix range. Many people are pleased with the results they get and, if I were ever looking for something in this sort of use/price range, it would be the first ones I'd look at.

Personally, ive stuck with Fuji cameras, for little digital cameras and ive not had any problems. Personally i think there s range is awesome, however not really that small, but you get all the features of an SLR but for a fraction of the price.
Ive been impressed by the little panasonic, that comes with the 28mm wide angle lens. But i would stick with either canon, panasonic, fuji brands, they seem to be getting the best ratings atm.

I also agree Lumixs are very good although I dropped mine and cracked the screen. Now I have a Kodak V610 (which seem very hard to track down now) which is awesome, very thin body, 10x optical in a compact, lots of settings including panoramic and just generally very complete. They started off at £350 but I managed to find mine on amazon for £130.

yes down to 269 but no uk g.tee !

hope it does not go wrong or you will have to pay and then you have lost what you have saved by buying on the net !

try supporting your local dealer , its not ALL about how cheap you can get it !

Only 'net prices' currently bring the G9 down to close to what the OP intends to spend.

Not knocking local dealers, I actually bought mine in my local Jessops ( via their online store granted ) but I bought a Leica D-Lux recently from a local indepenent. The advice and ability to have a fiddle more than made up the smallish difference in price.

Digital IXUS 860 IS

£235 approx.
8.0 Megapixel
equiv zoom - 35mm equivalent: 28 – 105mm
3 inch rear screen which is fabulous

Bought it before Xmas as a pocket jobbie...no need for a viewfinder which is always small and pointless, so love the big rear screen.

Really, really pleased with it.
T4 Cameras Swindon - they will do a great price.

I was in a similar sort of mind to you and in the end got a Panasonic Lumix - the Canon Powershot S5 IS was also highly recommended to me but I couldn't find one in real life to have a "play" with ( whereas the Panasonic was in most shops round here ) so I went for the Panasonic.

Very pleased with it so far - has done well in many camera mag reviews although it can be noisy at higher ISOs - good zoom and the images remain crisp at the edges.

Been impressed with the "night" settings as well, something my old Sony Cybershot couldn't cope with too well at all

I've ben using a Canon Ixus 960 for a while now, its a very good small camera but like all similar cameras it still produces relatively poor quality images in low light at high ISOs (800 and above). If you want good quality images in low light you need a very recent SLR such as the Nikon D300/D3.

Not played with the T200, but I do have the W200 which I picked up at the end of last summer - different in style but equally small and compact and has 12Mp to boot.

It does everything I wanted it to (mainly goes everywhere with me in work laptop bag for taking pics of issues at customer factories) and when out and about and I don't fancy lugging any of my SLR's with me. Obviously the small size of camera body is great, but that does mean losing out quality elsewhere, but at the end of the day if you want a top shooter and don't care about the size you buy an SLR, if you want a small, pocket sized jobbie then the compact P&S is the choice of the day...

which lumix model would you recommend, i have seen the tz3 which seems to have some good reviews. as long as it producs good shot in indoor situations, something which just produced blurry pics on my Sony T7.

Reading this with interest.
- We have a line of pentax optio compacts in family.
- I have a S, uncal and S4, family S55i, other uncal two s7's etc. And also a SV.

There all good cameras, and the old girl has done by proud however mine is the oldest now and starting to feel it time is up, ive had it three years, bought it for £80 second hand!

Ive also heard about the lumix and the canon ixus ranges. How to people feel this compair against the optio s range?

Ive also been offered a Olympus Style600 by a freind, but i might decline her offer due to it not having a build in microphone (i use my camera a fiar bit for short vid clips) which are also quicktime vids not avi's

I'm an Ixus fan - just got the 960IS - literaly an hour ago so its too early to call but it seems to be packed with features and I can only assume that 12mp is going to give excllent definition as I like to print the good images and crop quite agressively.

Another vote here for Canon PowerShot cameras. Although i've only got the A460, it's a cracking piece of kit for the money.
