Not being a fan of white wine (it gives me acid) I tend ty try more reds

I've got a few favourites but is there anything worth giving a go rather than buying the same time and time again?

To give you and idea of what I like I've always got bottles of the following in the cupboard;

Bonarda Dolce - Bulli

Cabernet Sauvignon - Wolf Blass (yellow label)

Rioja Crianza - Marqués de Cáceres

Try The King or its poorer cousin.

But then you know about those.

Still worthwhile though.

Get a case of Andrew Mcphersons The Full Fifteen from Laithwaites, about £70 a case. I love it. Anything by Andre Roux is usually a belter too.

Penfolds.

It's worthwhile buying various ones from different grapes and regions and making tasting notes, you should discover fairly quickly which grapes you prefer.

don't know what your local wineshop is but odds on you have an Oddbins near by

Glen Carlou Syrah is one of the best wines in S. Africa and a snip at £13.

Other great reds I buy in Oddbins are two spanish reds by Alejandro Fernandez called Condado de Haza and Pesquera. Both are sub £15 and Pesquera has a few older siblings (Reserva and Janus) which are world class and up there with the Petrus and lafites of the world.

I like D'Arenberg wines and the Galvo Garage is good at £11

£10 for an everyday wine??

bloody hell, £5-6 in England and £4 in France will do just fine for everyday, plenty of nice reds?

not that I drink it every day - maybe a bottle a week so I can justify spending an extra few quid

I'd second those recommendations.

Another personal favourite that's fairly widely available through Oddbins is the Domaine Belle Crozes-Hermitage 'Les Pierrelles' - perfect for sipping on a cold dark evening with a stew or a good roast. Priced at about £12.

Montes Cabernet / Carmenere blend from Majestic's. About £7 / bottle. Planeta (Italian) Merlot about £18/ bottle. You can't go wrong with either

Most Valpolicella Amarone's are exceptionally good in the 15 - 20 quid price range.

At the other end of the scale (mrs M & I have a glass or two of wine every night), Yellow Tail Shiraz is very good and widely available, Wolf Blass Shiraz is good, Casillero Del Diablo is a favourite as well.

I rather like this one: Debut - a big plummy red which punches well above its weight for the £7 - £8 price tag.

Virgin Wine sometimes have it, as do 'Spittoon' - we spit so you can swallow - arf! smile

Keeping with the Italians in supermarkets, there's currently a Banfi Brunello di Montalcino in Tescos for £15 and a lovely Poliziano Rosso di Montepulciano in Sainsburys for £8/9. Look for the Caffagio Chianti Classico in most supermarkets for a reasonable "everyday" Italian red.

If you're after something really good for a special treat try and get hold of 'Lorraine' Shiraz from Alban Vineyards, California. It's the most subtle and complex Shiraz I have ever tasted. Not sure where you can get it in the UK, try the Wine Treasury, or maybe an online broker.
