Caution on modifying your old Mini.

I can remember way back in 1976 buying a tired orange Mk3 Mini Cooper S reg HRD 674J.It set me back £1875,not cheap and not expensive. Like most owners i desided to change it a little ie Minilite wheels, bucket seats and (Why oh Why) a 45DCOE Webber Carb.
This car unknown to me was a real rareity with less than 1500 models built and only 35 known examples built and registered on a 1971 K plate. Recently a well respected Classic Car dealer who sells serious collectors cars including vintage Bentley's,Roll Royces etc was advertising a Old English White Mk3 Cooper S for (waite for it) £14,950 and he had recieved quite a few serious offers close to this sum.
I know because i rang him up and he was in the process of selling the car.
Now keeping that mini for thirty years would have been a problem but it does go to show if you own a very collectable car keep it totally original because that is the only way to safeguard your investment.

Those of us who are old enough can all look back and say, "why did i ever get rid of that car?", im sure weve all been there at sometime, I have.
1980, i bought a 1968 MkII Cooper S, for the princely sum of 500 pounds inc a swap for my old 1966 Cooper worth around 600 pounds at the time. This car had all the bits on it, as fast as anything around at that time, I did loads of work to it and had lots of fun over 3 years, then sold it for 900 pounds. It took me ages to sell as no one wanted them, it was around the time of 15% annual inflation, money was tight in everyone pocket and the insurance for the car was rediculous even then, i can remember i was paying something in the region of about 500 pounds per year (fully Comp) in 1981.
If only i knew, what would happen over time..........
Dream on!!!!

At a classic car show last year I parked my '64 Cooper 'S' next to a blue 1950 Ford V8 Pilot. The Pilot's owner admired my Mini and I had a good look at his mint-condition Pilot, as that was my first car back in 1961. I asked him what it was worth and he said c.£8000. To think I sold mine to a scrap man for £2/10s in 1963 when I got my first Mini because the engine had had a partial seize and I couldn't be bothered to check it over and renew a few bits!
