Err... wouldn't that be dangerous and illegal on a motorway?

There is a really great underpass on the main road near the Clifton Suspension bridge. If you drive away from the bridge, going in the opposite direction to the city docks, you'll see it on your right, less than a mile from the bridge. It will be quite safe to park up there.

I'm not sure about this - there is a covered part of the road here to protect from falling rocks, but it's open at the sides and not lit.

AFAIK the nearest place would be the Brynglass tunnel on the M4 outside Newport, but it's not very attractive - I'd stay in London.

Rich,

Depends what you want to do as you can't stop in them, but some good tunnels in East London where I used to live. Its a nightmare to get there though from Surrey though as the traffic is always shit (part of why I moved out). Still if you can put up with that, consider the limehouse link, blackwall tunnel + Rotherhithe tunnel (Brunell designed). All E14 postcode.

I've considered going up there with my camera mounted on the cage and doing some shots through the tunnel, but not had the time yet. The traffic is at least clear after midnight when you'd probably want to take them, but be careful the tunnels aren't closed for maintenance as they all seem to shut regularly at night for this.

p.s. sorry I haven't got back to you about a date to do those pics of my car. So busy with work at the moment.

The tunnels just off Tooley St (under London Bridge station) are probably the best for static photography as far as atmosphere at least, plus parts are daylight lit . Westferry Circus is also handy, it's an underground roundabout by Canary Wharf, easy to park up at the right time of day (night) although the lighting causes colour problems in there.

You also have to look out for large groups of sportscars making lots of noise. wink

It was not under the bridge but less than a mile from it. I was passing in the car and it certainly appeared to be a good spot as it seemed to offer space to park underneath, away from traffic.

The only tunnels on the right where you describe are for the railway line - not a safe place to park.

There is the Medway tunnel at Rochester. Nice thing about it is that there's a roundabout at each end, so you can keep turning around and go through as many times as you want.

It wasn't a tunnel, it was parking under a road bridge.
