That sounds like a Speed Six engine.
I bought my Tuscan in Oct 2006.
Sent it for engine rebuild early Nov 06 and got her back in Feb 07. 4 months of agony.
She then through a shim in March 07. Luck though, I shut down straight away and the shim was found right next to the valve.

Hope you get her back soon.

Don't worry - at lease it happen at a miserable time of year .. when it's really not that great idea to drive a light weight powerful sportscar with no traction control..

It will be back for the spring and you should have a whale of a time.. smile

Mines been off the road for over a year now during it's restoration. I have to look at it every day in the workshop in pieces and it's sooo depressing! Good thing is I only drove it once after buying it then it was ripped to pieces so I can't miss it too much. The highlight of my day is starting him up and hearing that engine!Gladly though mines off the road for aesthetic changes, the engine is the one bit still in tact and working smoothly

4L V8 by the way, amazingly never misses a beat despite dust and non useage! bow

So no you arn't sad, I suspect you won't feel whole again till you're back behind the wheel

Does anyone know or did you find out why the engines threw a shim?

And yes, I do miss her, (are tivs male or female?).
Depends on the car & owner, mine just feels male, but then I am female. Most men would call theirs a she though as with all mechanical stuff.

I was told that the shim problem is rare but it would be interesting to know how many S6 engined car owners have had this problem.
I never got a clear explanation of how it can happen.

Mine was caused by my cats breaking down and a piece finding its way into the piston rolleyes check your cats guys thumbup

Wow, that's remarkable. Wouldn't the debris have had to travel back up the exhaust against the gas flow and against gravity and then make its way past the valve, for that to happen?

Isn't it just, I found it hard to accept as well, but I have been assured this is the exact cause from a shim jumping off. It cost a lot rolleyes

Sorry, but that is a physical impossibility, it means it has to have reversed the whole function of the engine such that it sucked the piece back from the exhaust!!!! nono
Who told you it was from the cats?scratchchin

It is remarkable, as GreenV8S was stating, that someone should suggest that that was the cause, but without being as blunt as me. Apart from which the Cats are a ceramic material and that lump is clearly a steel, looking at the way it has deformed it would seem to be a mild steel, rather than a hardened steel, it has to have entered from the intake side of the engine. Also it is odd that you have such damage to the valve spring cap, as the head of the valve stem should be above the valve spring cap and that there is the seeming loss of the collet.
But then what do I know I've only got a little V6 in mine so it's not a real TVR!!rolleyes

Good luck with it anyway.

Does seem highly unlikely...more like summit came loose (or was left in by accident) in the induction area, and was then sucked in, causing the problem.

When my 600 mile old factory rebuild threw a shim in autumn 06, the factory at the time said it was either a poor quality shim (apparantly they had a bad batch and got them mixed up with the ok ones) or I had down changed incorrectly and over-revved the engine.

As I had been sitting on the M4 at a steady speed when my engine suddenly turned into a diesel I decided it was either a bad shim or option 3: shit design.

Luckily for me the shim did not end up in the oil pump as they normally do and the fix did not require another rebuild. Just a new shim and guide retainer.

Dom at power also told me the cats do get sucked back into the engine, something to do with engine pulsing. Others with early ie 2000-2003 engine rebuilds were told this also, although I don't know by who, probably the factory I guess in the early days.

Did not think the TVR cats were ceramic, but they certainly do a nice job of breaking down/burning out quickly.
