Ref our phone call of Friday, just for you.......
I think its great got to admit in the flesh it does not have the presence of a Merci or a Diablo, being significantly smaller & less outragious- more restrained in the style of (for example)an NSX or 996T and as a real world supercar it realy does it for me. (far far too quite as standard though, but easily sorted im sure)
Howabout as a solution get the Gallardo is as the everyday car & forget the A4 or A6 2nd car idea (you dont need another Audi quattro when the Gallardo is posibly other than the Merci the ultimate Audi quattro ) and keep the 355 for hood down weekend frollics

Earth calling Ninja
Ignore Iguanas more sensible than usual suggestion. Instead wait a year and buy a used Murky with a 50k saving on list. I'm sorry, however good the Gallardo is to drive, it does not have scissor doors. You will therefore not feel you have experienced "real" lambo ownership with this car.

Hurt by Daz's suggestion that I have made a sensible idea, I say to get the sissor door effect & save circa £40k over the Merci all you need is an angle grinder some door hinges from B&Q & the bird from Flashdance with her welding gear to sort it out for you.
Oh and a tube of superglue just in case her welding is a bit dodgy and also a tin of halfords own 'Lamborgini damage your retina's orange' would help make it look original
There we go, I can't go damaging my reputation with entirely sensible ideas

Ali, I've got some Gallardo video footage (including brief interior shot) that you might like to see some time...
Problem for me is that Lambo's are supposed to be outrageous, truculant, loud & exhilerating. The Gallardo does look fabulous in 'you've been tango'd' orange, but doesn't have the visual 'fk#c you' factor it should have. Also, far to quiet. The only V10 road car that really does sound F1 is the Porsche GT. V12 still sounds better!
Lambo's need to main things to be Lambo: 12 cylinders & scissor doors, Gallardo sports neither. Still, if you can't stop yourself then I'll force myself into the passenger seat for a Ninja blast sometime
PS Have found a fk#cing lovely NSX in the perfect spec, soon as the Trev goes she should be mine...

I think we're missing the point of the new Lambo here.
I agree that scissor doors and a V12 makes a Lambo, but this car has been specifically designed to target a new and different market for Lamborghini. That's why the fact that it isn't quite a typical Lambo is the whole point, people who wouldn't normally consider buying one now will.
All in my opinion of course !

Having seen it in the flesh for the first time on Sunday it just didn't do it for me. Can't explain why but It just didn't give me the instant grin a 360 Stradale does for instance. The build quality looked very high and I suspect with Audi's involvement that running costs will likely be reasonable as another weapon to tempt Ferrari buyers to the marque.
At the end of the day its all down to personal preference and the good news is the 90 - 120k price range is filling with new models which will certainly make for a joyous shopping trip

Alex, thanks for that! It was good to talk to you on Friday, you lucky git! Let me know when you want to take a 355 for a blast and we'll get together.
I went and had a quick look at the Gallardo yesterday, and I must say it didn't do it for me. A couple of mates had a look and thought it looked like some kind of version of an MR2 or Celica thingy (they are not really *car* people!). I looked at the front long and hard, and I must confess, much as I didn;t want to admit it, it looks like a Celica!!! Some angles look quite nice, I think the back actually looks much better in the flesh.
But ultimately, I don;t like it enough to buy one. I'd rather have two Astons for the stipulated £60K each.
I still stand by my notion that it *seems* over priced for what it is. It does look well made, but I'd still rather a 360. The design grabs you more.
I'm still trying to convince the insurance companies that I'm not that bad a risk. I think Tesco/Privilege have stopped with the 6.0, but nothing is consistent with these guys. They had quoted me £3800 on an SV 99 Diablo. Now they want £7400 and its the only late Diablo they will insure for me. It takes ages getting a quote out of them as they have to go to the underwriter. They say the £8K they quoted before for the 6.0 was only valid for a certain number of days, and now the underwriter has stopped on these cars?
Its pissing me off so much I'm beginning to feel like giving up. I know one of Manu's lads is driving a Murci LHD and paying £7K, he's 23! Using the same underwriter as Tesco and Privilege. They quoted me circa £11K on a Murci. Err, I'm 25, squeeky clean record, and the car would be RHD? Oh well.
Oh, and who are you calling Minja, Mr Rubber Gloves?

Ninja, careful with Tesco or any insurer for that matter.
Eight weeks before collecting my porsche I got a quote from them for £1,650 valid for a few months. 2 weeks prior to collection I contacted them to say put it on cover from X date and send me the docs so the garage can tax it etc when it arrives. At this stage Tesco advised the quote was made in error and their quote would be £3,600. As the original quote was verbal there was sweet FA I could do about it. I ended up insuring elsewhere. Just be careful taking delivery of a car because company XYZ say they'll insure you for £ABC.
Is there a Lambo owners club? Do any brokers offer specialist schemes via the club.

Ali - have you tried A-Plan?
They were within spitting distance of Tesco's quote and matched it for me in the end, plus made all the right noises about the cover and the service.
They've also been ultra attentive since. They might well go the extra yard to try and get you a decent quote.

Here is the opinion of a non-Lambo guy. I absolutely love the look of the new Gallardo, and can't wait to see one in the flesh (calling Criswell to see when their shipment arrives.)
I've always found the Lambos to be a bit too outrageous, and to me look dated. The thrill of seeing a Countach is because of what it is...they now look a tad ugly to me (sorry.) The Diablo's look beautiful, but too long for my tastes. The Murci was the first Lambo I thought looked refined and elegant rather than a huge wad of testosterone.
But this Gallardo is magnificent looking in all the photos. It looks light and quick, with a great overall balance in it's design. The cars lines flow, but not so much as to make it look passive (like the Ferraris sometimes do.)
Obviously I can't afford a Lambo or Ferrari right now (yet) but this car has knocked the 360 from the top of my wish list.
And really, that's the point of the Gallardo. It really was designed to appeal to a different market...those of us who covet a smaller, lighter elegant supercar. Those of who you like the full fledged V12 scissor wing treatment still have the Murci.
The Gallardo is going to be a huge success...and steal a bit of business away from Ferrari, I'm sure.

Andy,
I'll give them a ring, thanks!! Never heard of them before...
Steve, I tried peart with no success. With most insurers an age of 30+ is a prerequisite.
Should be visiting and having another chat with Lambo London later this week. I don't think I'll fall in love with the Gallardo, but I am trying hard to!

Same here. I think "Diablo", then I think, "but in that video, it looks so cool..." How sad?
Steve sat me down to show me the video in the showroom, I was like "yeh I think I've seen this one before, maybe." Yeh right, like *maybe* a million times.
Footman James have still not got back to me. Will give them ANOTHER call.
Call you later.
