metz 58-af1 and canon g9

has anyone experience of this combination. shooting with the flash in auto (non ttl.ettl), manual and aperture or shutter priority is no problem.
using ettl the shots are over exposed about 2-3 stops! have downloaded the latest software v2 and this hasn't cured the problem.
any ideas or should i go back to the shop?

found the answer to this. they are not compatible, they do not communicate correctly, so only buy genuine canon flash guns for this camera.
