Two movies I've seen this week, both visually stunning in their own way, and SO different.

'The Page Turner' and 'The Bourne Ultimatum'.

If you can get into both ends of this particular spectrum, then you are probably me.

Not seen the page turner, any good (apart from cinematography)?

One of my all time favourite films is Apocalypse Now, even to this day I have never seen a film like it. Everything about it is superb, the music, photography, acting, I could go on..

Page Turner is arty French subtitled thing. I liked it a lot, but it's about as opposite to the Bourne trilogy as you could get.

thumbup So glad there is another numpty here who notices these things! wink

I thought I was on my own... I'm renowned for commenting on cinematography (and a favourite of mine is continuity cockups as well!)

So, you are not alone...

a few stunningly shot films:

requiem for a dream: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qz45M9nVF0M

spun (even tho they ripped off requiem's style) great title sequence here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skiUUrYxZeA volvo content inside :-)

dark days...16mm black and white film about homeless people living in new york subway tunnels, what i like about this film is he just used what he had, the people living down there tapped the electricity, worked as crew, stared in the film, and even built dolleys to shoot tracking shots that run along the subway lines. inspirational stuff (he's a brit too) couldn't have been shot ANY other way. : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fuo52ILhWHY

some of the itv drama's have amazing cinematography, "boy A" that was on a few weeks ago looked superb.

i watch movies thinking "wow that would make an amazing photo"

great thread :-)

Lawrence of Arabias cinematography is amazing, especially the scene with the two camels running past each other on the desert and Omar Shariffs initial scene. Then again Freddie Young wasnt exactly a shabby DOP was he!

Constant Gardener i thought was beautifully shot too. The movies Three Kings and Jarhead I thought were well photographed too.

Saving Private Ryan is an obvious choice but rightly so IMO.

Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid has fantastic cinemaphotography also.

all IMO of course!

How about the intro to Casino Royale? I really enjoyed the grainy B&W look and thought it worked really well, after that it's just another easy going Bond film.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Bourne series, really well done.

Ok... might sound like I'm off on a tangeant, But..

Heroes, the 2nd series, I noticed this watching in HD in the last episode (no.11?)

Two people in frame, one very close to the camera on the left, the other, far away on the right, both very sharply in focus.. But the middle ground.. Blurred out?!? Kinds similar effect to a tilt and shift lens on a still camera, is this how they do it?

pretty impressive all the same!

another thing I saw on the making of on beeb2, they filter the different locations, so one place has a yellow hue, other place a grey hue etc. so you then, later on know what location they are in without the on screen prompting! thought that was kinda cool too!

Left field answer for you; Top Gear.

Ok it's not a movie, but my goodness are the car reviews shot and produced well!

(agree about Bourne trilogy. Though, I'd say number 3 - The Bourne Ultimatum was just ever so slightly a bit too OTT compared with first and second. Nevertheless, awesome films yes)

I agree with whats been said about Top Gear and the Bourne Trilogy, both are beautifully crafted! Also the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, just look at that scenery!! biggrin

Fifth Gear try to copy Top Gear but it never looks as good IMO.

Just about all CGI too. Even the bits that don't look CGI, if you follow me.

The acting was certainly CGI. (And I should have added 'completely' to OTT). It was extrordinary though.
