Just bought an Alfa GTV 2.0 TS. It had a recon engine at 80,000 miles and the garage put Magnatec Oil in. The 92,000 miles service is nearly due and I am considering a complete oil change to fully synthetic, something like Mobil 1 maybe. I do 600+ miles a week and I do drive her fairly hard, any suggestions to the best oil?

Alfa recommend 10/40 Semi Synthetic as standard and that works well. My 145 2.0 Twin Spark ran to over 80,000 with no cause for concern on it. (Either Selenia or Agip). Alfa also used to say you could use 10/60 fully synth for hard use. I don't think it will be necessary unless you are taking it on the track every weekend. I'm almost certain Mobil don't do a 10/60. They may do a 10/40, but if they don't you will be best looking at another brand. Millers is a good brew and often a bit cheaper than a "big name".

The other thing to consider is reducing the oil change time from 12,000 miles. Better to use a semi synth and change it twice as often than use a fully synth and run it for a long time!

I use 10/40 semi-synth in our Spider and a previous 16v equipped Alfa we've had. Doesn't need more imho.

Thrash them daily and they usually behave wink

Don't bother with Mobil1 - it's too thin for high mileage Italian engines, & the motor will just drink it. Selenia 20k is good, or if oil consumption is high, use HPX (available from Fiat dealers) - great stuff for high mileage engines.

Thanks for the pointers, guess I may just go with Selenia and get the oil changed more often. Someone recommended a good Alfa Specialist down here in Southampton who is also a dealer for Selenia so I will book mine in for a check up and oil change.

Any specialist will carry Selenia. Unfortunately I don't know one near Southampton.

I use 10W60 Castrol Edge. I drive my car very hard, it's a 156 Twin Spark, and uses a bit of oil if I use 10W40 but with the 10W60, oil consumption is checked completely. It's a fully synthetic racing oil and is superior to most oils on the market.
