Time to start some debate, because I've been sitting on this for a while and it's finally bugged me enough...

The subject of 'THUNDER'... appears to have been hijacked - or at least the true meaning forgotten.

TVR "London Thunder" was about the workers, so was the retrospectively named "Blackpool Thunder" and finally the "Thunderball".

SO WHY has Thunder become about self promoting and taking glory (The Daves)?

Thunder isn't about glory... Hell I came up with the "Thunder" name but I wouldn't go naming random events that I feel like organising after it, because it debases the spirit of what "Thunder" was all about.

I can take the fact that I was thought of enough to receive a signed workers shirt at the Ace café but then written completely out of the script at the Thunderball because the LT2006 shirts failed to net a profit (actually I lost £100, but I and countless others have precious mementos of the day, so I don't mind)... I chaired the daily conference calls arranging the Thunderball, up to about the mid, point and off my own bat organised the donations site - which netted a lot of the funds that went towards Thunderball. But I didn't mind, because I didn't have to take centre stage.

It's not just me who thinks this, I've had contact from members of the "Thunder" / "Thunderball" committees and workers who aren't happy that the real meaning of "Thunder" has been forgotten. I even had a suggestion of "Stealing their Thunder" and having a large meetup of TVRs ad ex-workers around the same time as the tunnel run arranged a while ago - I refuse to use its name as given as it does not conform to the spirit of Thunder. The reason this didn't happen is that some key people then found that thy were not able to make the event.

I don't care if this upsets some people, I just wanted to get it off of my chest.

My tuppence worth:

The word 'Thunder' is just such a good description of the noise made when 2 or more TVR's get together for a hoon - and particularily going through a tunnel - that in many ways (unfortunately) you are a victim of your own success.

You may well have dreamt up the name first but as a descriptive word it cannot be "frozen" in perpetuity to mean only 1 thing and have only 1 connotation.

I'm sorry as I can see where your coming from but I do not agree entirely with you. I also suspect that if you'd had absolutely nothing to do with LT2006 etc you also wouldn't see what there is to get upset about.

I was on the London Thunder run as well and share your sentiments over the closure of TVR and all of the implications thereafter but you have to move on now - TVR is still very much alive in the hearts of the owners/drivers and if they wish to call a meet "Something-or-other Thunder" then so be it - it harms nobody and does not detract from the LT2006 event in any way - it was and forever will be the biggest single TVR meet ever staged - no regional 'Thunder' event can ever steal that.

All IMHO and without slighting or disrespecting anyone.

Dave Hughes had the idea of a southern blackpool, I had the name, it all snowballed from there. What got up a lot of peoples noses is the glory claimed by certain people and trying to take the limelight from the people who we did this for in the first place - the workers.

These sentiments have been flowing around the background for a while - it's just taken ages for it to come out.

FYI - I'm not drunk, I just had to say something!

I agree completely with the above. The LT2006 run was absolutely about the workers and, whilst the event was a great success, the outcome was sadly as we all feared it would be.

The day was a memorable day for all involved and where is the harm in having predominantly TVR runs to commemorate it moving forward?

I applaud all of the efforts made by all involved in creating the original but I am afraid that I cannot see the problem here...

IMHO, for what its worth, London Thunder 2006, was a fantastic day, when, in true British spirit, Owners / Drivers / and workers all got together to celebrate a great Marque and to oppose the way NS disposed of the company.

i think that it is Damn rude and disrespectful that a few individuals should start arguing about a "Name" especially at this time of year, when hopefully many or most of the workers (i'm hoping) are back on their feet and can enjoy a better Christmas than last year.

I am proud to be English, proud of what TVR is and proud to be a part of last years run,

DON'T SPOIL IT!

But the Thunder events this autumn celebrated one year on from the original events and the core particpants knew what was being commemorated. Many cars sported London Thunder stickers on the Tunnel run.

Plenty of ex-workers were also present in Blackpool and expressed their gratitude of a year ago and that it was still great to see the owners support.

I don't really get your point. The Thunder title has hardly been "exploited" and if it has, for what gain and by whom ?

And as previously stated, it does correctly describe the noise of multiple TVR's, especially in confined spaces like Piccadilly and Whitehall ears

Again, as merely one of the masses who came on the LT2006 run, flew flags and chipped in a few bob BUT DID NOT ORGANISE ANYTHING I fail to see your problem.

You say "What got up a lot of peoples noses" - but it hasn't got up mine or anybody elses I know who went on the run - and was merely a participant.

And "Certain people" as you say, have not go any "limelight" in my eyes.

The more I read your OP the more it comes across as 'one clique' is pissed off with 'another clique' within the TVR community.

Sad really and if this thread continues it can only be to the detriment of the memory of last years fine event.

IMHO

I went on the original London Thunder run and took my family. A great day and one I'll always remember.

I also went on the Tunnels thunder run, on my own this time. For me this was a personal anniversary run plus the opportunity to make a little noise in London. Having left a little early I had the fun of driving the route alone plus a doughnut in whitehall at 6am smile

Being on the outside of any cliques, I thought thunder was the colelctive noun for TVR's smile

rolleyes by 'eck there are some lame rants on PH at times but surely this is down there with the worst of them.

If someone else making use of the word 'thunder' is so offensive, then perhaps it should have been trademarked originally. Presumably it wasn't, so get over it. I have no idea which parties are being referred to and don't care, but it amazes me how petty certain sections of the TVR community can be. Whatever happened to dignified silence? It used to be if you had a problem with someone you contacted them directly, had a quiet word in their shell, like and if appropriate, they would put their hands up and apologise. If they didn't, well you'd go round and you'd chin 'em, and that would be the end of it.

Can't people just grow up and worry about something that's somewhat less trivial? I realise the ease of ranting on here means it can be a cathartic exercise but in many cases it simply reveals a poster to be rather pathetic.

Hi wavey

I'm with Hoover on this one.yes

My understanding of the recent Thunder in the Tunnels run was that it was organised to commemerate last years run and to remember the families who were affected by the closure.

Last year we had the Sagaris and Bal went on the original run as I was unable to go due to family circumstances.frown
We sold the Sag before this years run and I specifically asked if we could attend in our 'other' car as I was really glad to have the opportunity to be able to be part of it. There were a lot of proud people on that day ( there were a lot of lost people too - but that only added to the fun) smile - a great day was had by all.

Owning a TVR for lots of us is not just about the car but it is about the community and it would be a real shame if this issue was to divide the TVR community just because people had different interpretations of the purpose of the run, and of the choice of word used to promote it.

Please be nice to each other yes

Lorraine.

I'm sure Dave wasn't glory hunting when he put together thunder in the tunnels, I think the only glory hunter is V8cerbera with his 'I did this, I did that' attitude.

Thunder in the tunnels was great and I hope we get more events like it.
