Have finally taken the plunge and had twin 40 Webers fitted to the Vixen - she's raw and rorty... What a difference! Car is much keener to pull through all gears and sounds fantastic. I wish I had made this mod 18 months ago. Power used to kick in at 4000 revs (presumably when twin choke opened) but was rather sluggish the rest of the time. Has anyone else had twin carbs fitted / what is your driving experience?

Hi Emma,
do you have fitted twin carbs. to a standard 1600 GT crossflow
engine or are there also other modifications done to the engine (like a other
camshaft)?

I have a standard 1600GT in my Vixen and I am also thinking of fitting twin carbs.

Hi,
I had a full engine rebuild done 18 months ago and a Kent 234 cam was fitted then. Car is running beautifully now ;-) It's much quicker than it was with the single carb setup.

I had twin 40's, FR/Cam and winged sump on my 1600M set up by Trevor Jasper and Adrian Venn, the thing flew, loads more torque mid range. I stank of fuel when you spanked it....proper!

Emma,

I may sound synical, but this is by experience,,,

I used to run webbers on another car,,, yer,, great power, but reliability was pants because they were a bugger to keep in tune.

Thats why, when I fitted my Zetec, I fitted throttle bodies,, OK, maybe you dont have the same induction snort of the webbers, but its a fit and forget job... the other plus point is that when your poodling in traffic the engine managment system is programmed to be economical, when the throttle is more than half open - UNLEASH THE BEAST!

One other thing, once you start upgrading for power, your on a slipery slope. You cant upgrade something without upgrading something else.

I fitted twin forties this summer after 20years and wished i'd done it ages ago, the carbs sat on the shelf for eight years. Can put many more cars to shame now.

It certainly helps the engines volumetric efficiency, and being DCOEs, getting enough fuel "doesnt tend to be a problem", shall we say.

I bet you dont need the choke!

If the carbs are in good condition and you tune them right there should be no problem with reliability or fuel consumption. However, it's not easy to get the correct jetting as there are so many variables, E-tubes, main jet, air jet, idle jet.... Once you get it right it's all worth the trouble.
I have dual Dellorto 45 carbs in my Grantura (with Volvo engine), very nice sound and power!

Only to start the engine! The car is running better than ever and I really don't care if it needs tuning 2/3 times a year to keep it this way. It's much more fun to drive and sounds wonderful ;-) Mick at Mowatts (Wickford, Essex) fitted the carbs / did the rolling road setup. Am running on original wheels though - can anyone recommend an upgrade or do the Vixens handle better on their original wheels? Aesthetically I find them appealing although I remember seeing Ian Bannister's car on 3-piece Revolution alloys which looked great.

Try Minilites, I think the company is called 'tec del'??
I was quoted for size for size wheel roughly £90 each.
Some one on this forum probably knows the phone number

Be careful with the ML. compomotive will tell you that the vixen fitment is the same as the TR6. It isn't. What you find if you run a 185 or 195 / 65 / 15 tyre on a 6J rim is that the inner tyre wall will get very close to the bottom pivot bar (within 5 - 8 mm) at this tolerance you will almost certainly rub the pivot bar against the inner tyre wall during cornering.

If you run the ML or cheap KN TR6 fitments you need to put longer back studs in and run a spacer. the fronts are OK. not sure if the 5.5J fitment is the same

Dez at Tech del will supply a wheel with the correct backspace measurement. for what its worth I also find his wheels better quality than compomotives.

Thanks Neil - I knew spacers would prob be required. Will consider options between now and the summer. Have a great Christmas.
