Can any (petrol) car run on LPG (obviously when converted)?

I do loads of miles, but want an Impreza so was wondering whether this might be a solution?

Will an LPG car still run on petrol if needs be?

There's a dual-fuel conversion, where you retain the petrol tank and stick an LPG tank in the spare wheel well. You need the petrol to start the engine anyway, then switch over to LPG for the rest of the journey, keeping the petrol in reserve in case you run out of LPG.

LPG converted cars usually have a switch to switch from LPG to petrol and back. I think any car designed to run on leaded petrol will run fine on LPG.

ETA: bare in mind that there is no guarantee that the government will keep the tax rate on LPG so low. You might get the conversion done only to find that LPG gets raised to the same price as unleaded in the next budget.

Silly question. How many miles do you do? Compare this to the £2-3K conversion cost and the length of car ownership.
I was wondering this for my old BMW V12 but the mileage done did not justify the conversion.

LPG runs hotter than petrol, and may require hardened valve seats (as I learned at a cost....)

And do I receive a medal for old thread revival?
