Hi folks,
Hopefully someone here can help. I've recently treated myself to a Nikon D80 and hava a bunch of snaps for download. All were taken as raw files and show up as NEF files on my Mac Powerbook (G4, about 4 years old)
I'm at work now (for the next two weeks) so don't have the camera with me, only a card reader.
When I download the files into Iphoto they come out really blocky, presumably because the laptop isn't properly recognising the NEF files?? I assume things should sort themselves out if I were to install the Nikon software & download via the camera but it'll be a couple of weeks before I'm home to do this.
Is there anything I can download to convert the existing files to jpegs during the download process??

Thanks

Charlie

Use the nikon viewer or editing software that came with the camera.
It does a decent job and then can convert to jpeg.

Or buy something like Aperture.

OS X should support nef files as standard, but maybe only the newer versions will read the D80 files. What version of iPhoto are you using? Maybe time to update to iLife 08, or 10.5 maybe?

RAW support is delivered as a core part of OS X, so support for new Cameras is included in updates to OS X itself. There is an OS update for Tiger (10.4) which provided support for the D80, amongst other stuff. This was shipped a year ago:

Cheers folks,
It's an older version of OSX I'm running. Looks like the solution is to wait until I'm home and load the Nikon software to sort it out. I'm just impatient & would like to see the pics sooner. Nevermind.

Thanks

run software update to let the os update itself, and if you can, get a newer version of iphoto.

I use iphoto for all my nikon nef's, and havent had a problem. I'm sure there are better programs for interpreting raw, but iphoto's an easy way to store them. Any photos that are really awesome, i find the source nef, and bring it into photoshop cs3
