Hi All

I know there have been a few threads about this before, but just to let you know the camera's on the gantrys of the M42 seem to be VERY active at the moment. This last week every day on the way home I've seen them flashing, and only when they have the variable speed limits on. frown

I did read on PH that someone thought they are digital and you wont see them flash, but my speed camera detector goes nuts on some of the gantrys and like I say above I have seen them flashing, so I think they are just standard gatso!

Happy hunting

Fairly sure they just detect you going past and take your pic rather than average speed. Average would be too complicated for that stretch as they frequently change between each sector. manys the time i've been bimbling along a half empty motor way with the limit at 50, and then just as you get to the next sector it changes to 40 !!!.

With the position of them though I'd have thought they have to be digital photos, or how else would they get the film out !!!

Your right though I have seen them flashing someone almost everytime i've been down there in the last month or so.

One tip though is you can tell if the gantry your comming to has a camera by looking at the other carrigeway. As the gantrys all either have them on both sides or none at all

IIRC the gantries that are live have to be furnished with a large speedcam symbol board[1] - This is because they are hidden and hence cannot be painted yellow. Why? Because entrapment could be argued if a non-marked one got you (that's why roadside ones are yellow).

Just remember that non-live cams still flash sometimes - they just don't have any film in them.

[1]They certainly are on the M25 and nearby motorways - All of the M25's west-edge gantries have cams, only the symboled ones are live.

If you can see the camera on the opposite side they are under that gantry on your side too, as it's too expensive to cable up one side only.
