Powder coating a gearbox or painting?
Discussion
Hi Chaps,
Just getting around to preping my gearbox before fitting. I have a G50/03 box in pretty good nick. I was thinking of getting it powder coated.. Has anyone done this? Did it work ok?
I'm not sure what the best way to finish it would be. The block is going to be black, so I thought that the box would look nice the same colour... If you have painted the gearbox, what paint did you use? How well did it last?
Many thanks,
Mart

Many powder coaters are often reluctant to powder coat old castings.
When aluminium corrodes, the corrosion goes failrly deep into the grain structure.
When they subsequently heat the casting, post powder spraying, it "breathes", and creates numerous pores in the coating around the corrosion spots. The solution to this is to pre-heat the casting prior to spraying, but many of the powder coaters are reluctant (You know how it goes - "I've been powder coating for 20 years and I've never heard of it" ...blah..blah...blah. )
Stove Enameling is an alternative.

Hi Mart
I painted mine using smoothrite yellow and their special metal primer. Its been on eighteen months and I'm very happy with it.
