Help...Picking a new car
Discussion
Hey all. I currnetly have an 05 Evo 8. 430bhp and 460 ft lbs torque. Its pretty quick. 3.6 0-60 and over 170mph top end.
Looking for something new now, originally consider'd an e46 M3...but far to slow and boring.
Iv narrowed it down to an S2 Lotus Exige S...Or M12.
Evo costs a fortune on fuel, does around 210 Miles to £55. And costs a fortune on parts as they're prone to niggly faults.
The Exige S gets points for decent performance, but also being cheap to run, doing around 36mpg combined and parts are cheap for it. It loses points on cramped interior.
I went to see an M12 gto3 today. And loved the looks, and how much room it had inside compared to exige. Questions are aimed towards running costs..what are they like. What kind of MPG's? And how much to fill up the tank and how many miles to a tank full of fuel do they do in different situations.
Its not likely to see alot of track action, but will be driven everyday. Do they have alot of common faults?
Sorry about all the questions, iv done some searching but i want definitive answers.
Any help is appreciated.
Kind Regards.
Jay

Thank you for honest opinion.
In honesty, im quite short tempered and dont have alot of patience. I love working on cars though.
When they do have faults, is it something whos technically experienced could sort...or is it the kind of car that goes wrong and needs to go back to factory?
More interested in How many miles to a tank they do and how much to fill up. Evo currently costs me around £200 a week in fuel.

Your figures suggest about 20mpg. I've worked my mpg out and it comes out at 22 mpg, so there is nothing in it between my Noble and your Evo.
Also, if you are spennding £200 a week on petrol, that's 800 miles a week, 40,000 miles a year. That's 6 services a year for a Noble at about £750 = £4,500, plus tyres at £600 a set ( say 2 sets ) plus repairs. 40,000 miles a year in a Noble ? You're a richer man than me !!

Thats what im worried about. 40,000 miles is to much...what i give was an average..its more some weeks, less at others. But i comfortably do 20 - 25,000 miles a year. Saying that, iv done 15,000 miles in my evo since May.
I usually get good MPG out of my cars as i spend most of my time poodling about. I usualy give the car a good blast daily, but im not one of these that feels the need to go flat out to the shops etc...i do cover a fair amount of motorway miles to. Do you think driving sensibly MPG could be brought upto 28?
I can accept it doing silly mpg when being booted...More concerned with mpg when running around.

Just poodling and at motorway cruising you could get 28 ( the dealer I bought mine of told me he took a Noble on a long run, kept it nice and steady and got 32 ).
Why not get a cheap and chearful runaround and keep your Evo ( or Nob, or something else ) for weekends ? That what I do : A Nob for playing ( oo-er missus ) and a 1.2 Clio for going to work.

I really dislike run arounds. For example, im quite partial to the odd dabble with another car. Seems everytime i borrow my mothers tigra, i miss some fantastic oppertunities. When im back in the evo, nothing about. Sods law.
Id rather have a car i can drive everyday. If for nothing else then just for the fun of driving.

Hi,
I think petrol costs would be the least of my worries owning a Noble, to be honest.
I have to agree that the Noble, although it 'could' be used for doing 25000 miles a year, I don't think it is the type of car designed for lots of motorway 'normal and mundane' driving....others may well disagree and say they use it everyday etc etc.
Your best bet, as others have said is get yourself a cheap runabout for thrashing up and down a motorway, put the miles on that and cheaper fuel costs.
The Noble is not as 'user friendly' as your current car, to me it always seems a bit of an 'occasion' when I take the Noble out.
If it was me, I would go for the Exige, only because it is more of a 'daily' driver than a Noble in my opinion.
But....if you asked me which car would I have, without a doubt, a Noble....and thats why I have one! Wicked!
Hope this helps your decision!

I took my 3R, when it was completely standard the 300miles or so to Plymouth and 'pressed on'. Got 23.5mpg. On the way back I used no throttle, never went over 70mph and at time sat behind big lorries drafting. Got 24.4mpg.
If the dealer got 32mpg, it was on a trailer.
Must say I admire your enthusiasm, but 25k miles a year in a Noble!! You must be mad!! I'm not saying its uncomfortable, quite the opposite in fact when compared to my S1 elise. I do 25k miles a year for work and would only ever want to do this in a super comfortable cruiser with all the toys and trimmings.
There are plenty of good cruisers out there for less than £10k that have street cred, then you can get a toy car aswell that can be as extreeme as possible.
Works for me.

I moved over from an evo that was used everyday and for all occasions,ie shopping, work, footie ,golf etc.Since owning the noble the golf ,shopping and more has gone out the window as its just got no mundane practical skills .mind you! i didnt buy one to be practical.i did buy it for occasional track work and i find im polishing more than using in anger

I do love the way when you fill the car up the guage goes off the scale, does not move for 150 miles and then it drops like a stone over the next 50 miles.
Another problem with doing 20-25k miles in a Nob is resale value, or, rather, unsaleable. A lot of owners ( me included ) do around 5k miles a year so you see a 4 year old car for sale with less than 20k miles. I reckon if you had a 4 year old car with 80k to 100k on it you could not get rid of it in a christmas cracker.

I looked at a one car only scenario (and I agree with the one car idea)and looked at Nobles, Lotus, M3's I bought a Porsche 996 C4S, but also look at 993's (lovely shape)'BUT DO YOUR HOMEWORK'. Insurance is lower than the EVO (I had a 350bhp Scooby STI before) servicing is really good on the non turbo Porsches (even at main dealers) which have a service menu, really good on the motorway i have had 33mpg cruising at 80 and lovely car to drive... just a thought, I found the change from the Scooby very difficult, apart from the EVO theres not a great deal like it...
If you buy a Noble, the two car option is only way to go
and then theres TVR's, sorry, thats not helping is it
Interested in what you decide
Cheers Paul
Ps Escort Cosworth?? (Only problem....cant park it anywere...)
Its not as if i spend my life on the motorway. And resale value doesnt bother me in the slightest.
By judging replies in this thread, seems an exige S is more suited to my needs. Something thats quick'sh and enjoyable to drive but yet quite frugal. Seems noble is more of a weekend toy car and i want to be able to drive my car every day.
Cheers
