165/60/12 on the original rover wheels are a direct fit. Fit 5mm thick spacers at the rear (per the original John Cooper Pack) to ensure full clearance when loaded with extra bodies.

You can get away with 165 with genuine alloys as long as the suspension has not dropped at the front, you might need to put some shims behind the teardrop subframe mounts.
If you want to put some bigger tyres without any work Falken do a 155 which i put on my dads mini with no problems.
