Do the police currently have any legistlation to permit them to confiscate a camera or memory card? If so what are the conditions of when they can do this?

Not happend to me, yet, but just something I'd like to know my rights over.

Also what applies to MoD police in this respect? A lot of the places near here where I want to shoot have active bases so just would like a heads up

I'm sure a thread about this appeared around a year ago - I'm sure one of the P&V regulars will be able to find it...

I imagine there are plenty of circumstances where they could take it as evidence of a [suspected] crime, but I imagine they'd need to have reasonable grounds to think that it did contain evidence.

Photographers, Britains Criminal Mastermind number 1!

Sorry, but they can bollox because Im not giving up photography because some bored member of our esteemed Police Service took particular offense to someone taking photographs of cars...and using the Flash as an excuse its genius

I had taken some photgraphs of a bit of road whare the police say they caught me speeding by their hand held radar.

I was doing 29mph the police say they got me at 43mph at 160meteres I paced out the meteres took some photos then returned to my car. PLod was seriousley pissed off that I had taken pictures.

I then drove away after being charged for speeding but stopped just up the road and took some pictures of whare the police were standing so I could show in court, Oh by the way at 160 meteres I was round the corner and thet could NOT have recorded me speeding..

Fortunatley I had a Panasonic TZ3 compact with 10x optical zoom, as I returned to my car the police came flying up in there patrol car. dragged me out of my car and deleted my pictures from the camera.
They were going to arrest me for interfering with them doing there duty!!and said that it was illegal to photograph the police while working!!.

So by deleting the pictures they deleted the evidence I had to prove they could not have caught me speeding!!

Outcome 3 points on my licence

when was this? that sounds bloody ridiculous!

im not certain but i think the police have the right to take camera equipment if they suspect there is terrorism related evidence etc, but i really dont think they had any grounds to delete your photos!

Well, anyone who uses a PC knows that deleted pics on a memory card can be recovered very easily.

Yes I made a compaint,to right.

But due to lack of evidence and the fact that the police denied doing it and no independant witness as I was on my own. So no one to coroborate my story. nothing happened.

Perhaps I should have said I was an imigrant then i could have said my human rights have been infringed and got a Lawyer FOC,and a House, and benifits..

As an aside topic, if the Police confiscate a camera, they can and do go to the manufacturers and retrieve deleted images/video. I know of two Japanese mobile manufacturers that did this for the Police at offices in the UK.

For future reference there's a program called PhotoRec which does a great job of retrieving data from cards, even if they've been formatted (but not reused).

You'd better let Sky Sports and every Sports Photographer in the country know then as they regularly catch Coppers "working" on camera on match days...

First part is assault, second part is completely untrue.

I suspect the whole thing is made up, tbh. Never mind, I'm sure it sounds great down the pub.
