just took car out of garage to check over and there was a rattling noise like something fouling on a moving part. on lifting the rear clam the outside edge of the drive belt on right side of the engine was frayed. i've removed this bit and seems to be ok, but will this just continue to fray until belt snaps? might it survive?

Sounds like its the same belt I had replaced. It rubs on the edge of the crank casing. Its a quick fix to change if a garage has one in stock. It drives the alternator (i think) along with other things, so if it snaps you wont have any power. My advice would be to give it a missif its in the same state as mine was before it was replaced (almost half the thickness in places).

Post some pics up to show its condition, if its a small bit of fraying, it will prob be ok. If its started to deteriorate like mine had then i'd get ir replaced asap.

Yep -depends entirely on the state it's in. A wee bit of frying OK, but if it's in tatters then deffo not.

If it's in bad condition and you can get hold of one this afternoon, Shek (aka Stuart Faulds Motorsport) will be able to fit it at Snetterton no probs.

what exactly am i locating so i know what to ask for and where's best to look?
fraying is prob less than 1/5 of width. the piece that i took off is about 5-7mm or so in width. what i'm worried about is with the edge frayed will i need to keep taking another frayed/loose piece off after it comes away. i took the first bit off, started engine gave it 3000rpm then more started fraying. now taken off what i think is full length of belt (about 6ft) and seems better but will it last?
here are the pics

you should be able to get one off the shelf at any decent motor factors, maybe even halfrauds

Sorry mate, can't really help. Looks pretty knackered to me - but a 'mechanic' might say. "nah -that's absolutely fine". So, need a mechanic to comment. I just checked mine and no sign of any wear at all. If you, or anyone knows else knows one -send them this string and get them to comment.

halfords have alternator belt, with aircon for mondeo 2.5 v6, does it need to be for 3.0 or will this do?
they don't have a 3.0 one listed on their system, not sure if its a different part though?
any advice welcome
thanks

got belt from halfrauds, looks right, but i don't think its worth risking a 180 mile drive starting now to get down to snet from west yorkshire. its dark and wet so need both lights+wipers so sods law the belt won't last me the journey. will cancel tomorrow and do it another day, unless any opinions that belt should last until able to get it changed tomorrow?

thanks for replies fellas

Sorry to hear that Conleth. I reckon it would probably be OK for the journey, and as I said I'm sure Shrek would swap them over - but if it's the wrong part then you're stuffed.
I would have thought that the 2.5 and 3.0 belts would be the same, but what do I know..? Anything on Wiki???

Just had a gander on Wiki....

Alternator belt
6PK 1705 (6 ribs 1705 long)
available from any motor factors

This what you've got? Dosn't specify 2.5 or 3.0 so assume they're the same.

It only takes two minutes to change it, 1/2 inch socket drive in the tensioner/jocky wheel, push forward and release old belt, pull belt out, do reverse and install new belt as close to the cam cover as possible, check it's straight. It really is that easy.

BTW I don't know why it's worn on that side, I thought they wear on the other side, it doesnt run the water pump so it isnt the end of the world if it breaks.

i posted that info on the wiki when i changed mine.

i bought a ford part first and found it to be too long as yours will be.

i then bought according to the data on the old belt and posted the part number.

forget the make and model, you know the length you need, you know how many ribs, any decent motor shop should stock and find from this citeria

as mentioned easy and only 5 min to change

My thoughts too, maybe the garage swapped it round thinking it would last a bit longer?

probably been turned round iain, can't see anything it would foul on to wear on that side. it does run the power steering pump as i found out putting the car back into the garage with no belt on though. more weight at front than i thought, or could be wied tyres i suppose

Iain/Conleth,

Correct me if I'm wrong but did you guys both buy your M400s around about the same time from the same stealer? Coincidence perhaps or ......?

Cynically yours,
Graeme

Yes we did, my drive belt was also f*cked and should've been replaced by the garage that the dealer used for pre-sale servicing. When challenged the garage (not the stealer) was adament that the belt was fine when they had the car in. Load of rubbish IMO as it couldn't have got in the condition it was in after only being driven 200 miles or so. I've got it sitting under my desk right now actually!

yea, makes you wonder what the garage were doing, or not doing as the case may be. both iain and i had nearly identical problems, alternator belt and spark plugs. think its the garage though not the dealer as iain said

So they contract out the servicing then? Maybe it's time to send the QA/QC Gestapo in?

Hey Iain, have you thought about how you'll negotiate the 'sleeping policemen' in the company car park when you fit your front splitter? My colleague (Porsche GAYman owner) says that he used to bottom out his old TT when he was dropping off his other half.

I have seen that happen to a belt before, twice in fact! It can be caused by the belt not being fitted correctly. If one groove is over the edge of the pulley then it tears that "v" of the belt off.
