With the rack still on the car, is there a specific way to remove the old pinion seal without damaging the seat?

It isnt quite as simple as it may first appear.
You can remove the seal in situ but it is tricky and fiddly. I used a small screwdriver to prize it out.
The problem is that there is another seal further down the pinion shaft and changing the top seal doesnt usually stop the leak!
A proper rebuild is the only real solution.

The rack has already been refurbed and then returned again due to a leak. The hassle of taking it on and off all the time tends to generate leaks in pipework elsewhere!
